VW Emissions Scandal Thread V2

Featured Replies

Rising sales and a growing company is surely a great thing.

As long as quality and after sales / customer services stays high.

Skoda are not there now on the Surveys and Customer Satisfaction tables, they got caught out by actual customers responding probably.

VW wanted to be the biggest car manufacturer in the world & achieved that in the first 6 months of 2015.

September 2015 they were found out.

Less than 12 months later they think that can be swept under the carpet.

Lots of Audi, Porsche, Skoda and Seat to sort out yet though, even a 'Fix' to get approved for 1.2 & 1.6 Diesel Euro 5 engines.

VW/Skoda fudge figures, not just emission ones but sales as well but pushing pre-reg cars out to the dealers, one of the reason my local dealer switched from VW/Skoda to Renault/Dacia.

Don't worry as the UK's lower level of business activity will bring down pollution up to and after Brexit.

Also London Major has accelerated pollution controls to produce extra fines for cars etc not reaching Eur6 pollution targets and bring in expanded ULEZ in a year early ie in 30 odd month time instead of 42.

Now we hear that VW, BMW, Daimler & others involved in car parts manufacturing have been raided over suspicions of a Steel Buying Cartel. (steel price fixing probe)

It is good to see that there are Agencies in the EU that take these sort of things seriously.

Sometimes the Prestige Manufacturers have seemed to be able to produce very good value & priced models lower down the ranges.

VW have reserved their contrition for the U.S. ; they expect to bully their way through any 'minor' European issues, I suspect.

Not that any of us expected to get anything it's still disappointing that they have not considered some kind of loyalty contribution to stay with the VW brands. That, however, in this day and age would be admitting liability and I'm sure the lawyers would have nightmares at the thought.

What the VW Board or any CEO says people are not getting will not be their decision in the end.

They can reject compensation like they sometimes reject Warranty Claims, but a court can overturn that easily.

Today their Media Company is trying to spin new technology and it, and new models etc to knock articles on raids on VW to investigate

Steel Price Fixing.

No more 'Das Auto',  more 'Honesty',  they just forgot to actually begin that new phase of their Re-Imaging.

That is so very true and let's hope the lawyers who some of us have engaged will  robustly challenge  V A G's statement.

The simplest way to get back customer loyalty is to extend the warranty period of all those cars affected to, say 5 years.

As diesels there is a very good reason why they won't though.

I got another piece of waffle in the mail confirming how important my loyalty is but nothing specific about the actual 'fix'.

Some interesting stories to fill in the time

Apparently Australia is a (civil?) test case being watched around the world (outside of the U.S. of course) and may not be resolved 'til

2018 and VW claim there was no cheat device.

Any chance we might get some straight forward answers I wonder.http://www.drive.com.au/motor-news/volkswagen-australia-denies-using-defeat-devices-20160707-gq0r4k?eid=email:nnn-13omn581-ret_newsl-membereng:nnn-04%2F11%2F2013-drive-dom-motoring-nnn-drive-u&campaign_code=13IAU000&promote_channel=edmail&mbnr=NTM1ODUxMg

Many models are older than 5 years anyway.

The engines in question started to arrive early 2008 so some are already 8 years old.

How do you give a warranty to someone with an 8 year old car with 200k miles on the clock.

In fact how do you remap that and say it now complies with Euro 5?

My 1/2012 build was first reg 2/2013, + 5 would have been 2018 for me but for others problematic and then only if they are forced into the 'fix' .

There are so many variables including admissions/denials it makes yr head spin.

No old cars in Paris is the beginning of the end for the urban diesel and the IC engine AFAIC.

I think VW are buying time knowing a lot of these will be sold on or scrapped, reducing their liability.

Group court action should be started in the UK as I think it would be fair to show a loss and deception by VW or their staff.

Goods not as described also would cover it for any car less than 6 years old too no?

If those that matter in Lower Saxony are saying that 'no profits' means no Bonuses then that might just have some affect on those at VW that thought lying and cheating should line their pockets.

If the Defeat Device removal is doing nothing for some vehicles other than causing more pollution then hopefully governments will act.

& if Theresa May MP & UK Prime Minister and her other half are Audi Owners then maybe she will get which ever Transport Minister

she chooses to pull a finger out and get some action going to have things resolved or just say stuff it just let them keep polluting as they have been,

the Queen might not want the Royal Families Investments in the VW Group hit any worse than they are already.

I thought Queen B used to drive a Landrover 110 which they just stopped making because they pollute too much? They never fitted defeat software to those.

California rejects Volkswagen's recall plan for 3.0 liter diesel cars

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - California chief air regulator on Wednesday rejected a proposed recall plan from Volkswagen to fix 16,000 3.0 liter diesel Volkswagens, Audis and Porches in California that are equipped with devices designed to cheat emissions tests.

The California Air Resources Board said the company's recall plan was incomplete and deficient in a number of areas but said it will continue to work with the company to reach a resolution.

Volkswagen AG last month reached a $15.3 billion settlement with regulators over its 2.0 liter diesel vehicles that were also equipped with the devices that covered up the vehicles true output of air pollution.

The Royal Family and others might be able to buy new Defenders again if Jim Ratcliffe of Ineos (Grangemouth Refinery) manages to get some sort of deal with JLR.

There is no other 4x4 Workhorse available just now for those that need them other than buying used ones or keeping what they have.

Pickup Trucks are not always what is needed to do many jobs.

As good as the Defender was (is) it's time has passed. There are other credible alternatives on the market now.

If that won't wash there are still a plethora of brand new unregistered ones about waiting for new loyal owners, at a premium of course.

Still not convinced? Wait for the new one...

I wish the UK would stand up to manufacturers as much as the US.

OK, California may be taking it to the extreme but at least something from the UK Governement would be nice.

OT, but Silver1011,

can you name the credible alternative that the likes of Mountain Rescue Teams can buy new now as a replacement for a Defender 110 / 130,

or those Flying Hot Air Balloons and needing a recovery vehicle can buy.

Something other than a Unimog that you can mount Crane & Access Platforms on for working off prepared roads?

As many know that have owned and driven Land Rovers they are far from perfect, and for some jobs there were and are far better alternatives. For some jobs they were perfect and other than some older Toyota, Nissan, Mercedes or Jeeps there was no competition, and certainly not from Pickup Trucks with limited abilities, be that offroad or towing on and off road.

For the many that have owned and driven the Defender then the problem is there will never be a credible alternative.

The Defender has a cult following and as we see on here with the Skoda brand a lot of people will defend it at all costs.

There is no like-for-like alternative in my opinion, the Defender was unique for a lot of reasons, no two cars are as good as each other in all key areas.

However the Jeep Wrangler (from which some may argue the Defender was spawned from) is still available to buy in the UK today...

2016-jeep-wrangler-unlimited-75th-annive

So there are Jeep Wranglers and you will find on Youtube were they are tested by UK Mountain Rescue teams and are falling short.

(PS Defender is a name that started to be used years into Production', 'Rule Britannia' / Falklands and all that jazz.)

Many Land Rovers before anyone called one a Defender.
