Modifying for the clueless

Featured Replies

Hey Everyone!

So i've been driving for just over a year now, was more than delighted with my purchase from my close by Skoda garage.
Many of my friends love car modifying but i'm totally clueless, I know what i like and dislike but I wanted to ask you guys where are good places to start off.
I'm more interested in the aesthetics of the car rather than racing. I have seen some lovely post on this site of modified fabias and am just looking for someone to point me in the right direction.
I live in Ireland and i'm not exactly sure whats legal to modify etc, but i'd like to get angel eyes of some kind and possible seats and sideskirts.
Thanks for looking

P.S Is superskoda a reliable website?

For cosmetic aesthetics, I'd straight away soend £50 on some heko wind deflectors, fly eye headlights tint and some black plastidip for the chrome around the grill.

Debate the boot as well, all can be done in a short amount of time and personally, I think those things are a must aesthetically.

Only ever bought heater control knobs (that's "dials" if the sweary fairy intercedes....) from Superskoda. Were £12ish at the time. I think they're cheaper now but it's been so long that I may have missed delivery costs or summat.

All I'd say on bodykit parts is that typically, they only work well as a complete kit.... And avoid like the plague anything that isn't subtle or implies batmobile with 8x4" exhausts. :)

Remember that your insurance company may have rules regarding allowable and notifiable modifications.

Thanks so much for the ideas, i was looking at sideskirts today etc, but like as i said im interested in aesthetics it'll be funny to have a super good looking car with a 1.2 engine, laughs to be had

First things first, avoid the Maccy D shout from the above, your car will look 5hite!

Secondly, if you change anything on your car from the original specification it's considered a modification, so once you have decided what you want speak to your insurer to see how they will adjust your policy. One thing to mention is if you're under 21 you'll struggle to get insurance for ANY mod.

I would take a look through the various members car threads to get an idea what other people have done.

Basic visual mods include; colour code door handles (I paid a body shop to do mine for £60) De-chrome the grill surround (again I paid a bodyshop to do that along with my fog surrounds. Can't remember how much but under £100) Cupra-R splitter between £20 - 45 second hand / new, Lamin-X is cheaper than fly-eyes and looks better up close, under £30 (but you will need stronger bulbs as the film does reduce the light output a bit, even with the lightest tint they do)

Lol dude my comment was tongue in cheek the best advice I can give you is leave it alone, no matter what you do to it you'll unfortunately end up belonging in the 1.2 McDonalds crew.

Wait until your insurance drop enough so you can afford the car you want then spend money on that.

That's the sensible option but most of us on here are not that sensible so no doubt you'll end up following us.

Speak for yourself I like to think I'm reasonably sensible ... ;)

My first car however was not, proper ricer car. A 1.1 206, complete with tiny profile 17inch alloys, SP front bumper, spoiler, tinted windows, black 'sun strip', tacky metal petrol cap, metal door sill protectors, a huge rear bumper that was straight out of Need For Speed, add into the mix a set of 'Lockwood' clocks and a cheap metal gear stick knob. Sorted. All I had to do was fit a big Alpine sub in the boot that was worth more than the car and my first car - Ali G style inspired - was finished.

I remember on several occasions, Golf GTI's, a Subaru and a Type R all asked me for a race at lights because they thought it was the 2 Litre 180bhp 206 GTi, if only ... Hahaha

JRJG

Which is all well and good until you tell them you only have a 1.2 and they roll there eyes and do up their windows lol
