Hamilton had a small overlap implying Nico needs to leave 1 car width. He didn't. Wouldn't say Lewis was too aggressive as he got a much better run out of the corner but I get why some will say he was. Maybe 60/40?

To be fair to Rosberg he did leave a full 10mm between his wheels and the white line.

I just like the fact that after all their bleating last year about the rubbish Renault engine, they now have to eat a nice slice of humble pie. Even if the engine isn't quite the best on the grid, it

About enough for a front wing endplate ;). Don't agree with Lauda's comments. Come on Danny Ric!!

Very interesting race so far. This would have been for p3.

A star is born

That is incredible. Perfect drive from Max, kudos to Alonso too for being one of the first to congratulate him back in the pits

Well done Verstappen..

Was it about this time last year that Red Bull threatened to pull out of F1 because they couldn't get their own way and they tore up the engine contract with Renault.  Looks like RB and Ferrari will be hoping for a Merc first lap crash in the next few races.

Will Lewis get a grid penalty for Monaco? He was one warning away I think.

Guess that will depend on the stewards view. Wouldn't surprise me but if they did that, grid penalties for both drivers imo. Day belongs to Max, very pleased for him

Depends how the stewards view the incident. Hamilton went for gap that vanished very quickly and I guess it was either hit Rosberg or go for the grass.

No action on Hamilton or Rosberg, so considered a racing incident.  Verstappen did a great job today, well done to him.

Tw-ats.   Lewis and Nico.

Driver of the day: Nico :D Did he, didn't he...

Trying to drive at 170 mph on grass, not going to end well.

Big question for me was whether Nico was looking in his mirror and decided to squeeze.

I think he will do almost anything to secure this year's F1 title.

Renault new engine being tested tomorrow at the circuit, reckoned to be worth another 3 to 40 hp and with the RB chassis hopefully will make things interesting this season unlike last seasons borefest.   If Ferrari can dial it in better could be a 6 way scrap or even an 7 way (Bottas not Massa it seems) if can get the Williams to hand as well as go quick.

Great result for Versteppen, but even he must be thinking that it was only because there were no Mercedes in the race.

Vettel seems to be getting more and more annoyed that anyone should try and overtake him - what is his problem (apart from the obvious)??

I doubt Max has even considered the Mercedes abscence.

You've got to be in it to win it.

Except put his car in the right engine mode by the sounds of it :D

Maybe it was a faster engine mode that used all his battery by turn one?

Right about 2 years ago Nico and Lewis both got slapped wrists for doing that in the races and using up engine life.

Apparently he engaged the starting/launch mode as normal, they both got away alright, Nico got in Lewis' slipstream and passed him, then once the mode returned to 'normal' Nico has setup the wrong one, resulting in him being down about 160bhp, which explains why Lewis was gaining on him in such a big way.

I just like the fact that after all their bleating last year about the rubbish Renault engine, they now have to eat a nice slice of humble pie. Even if the engine isn't quite the best on the grid, it is certainly not something to be embarrassed about. I wont be holding my breath to see an apology from RB about the slagging they gave Renault last year, No doubt their recent competitiveness is all about their fantastic car and their amazing drivers. Renault were just along for the ride    :D.

At testing in Barcelona.

The Merc still looks the business with Red Bull and Ferrari close behind.

The rest are, in my humble opinion, some way adrift.

I'm hoping Williams will come back again.

Was good to see Sir Frank on Sundays coverage

Sadly, well off the pace today, with fairly limited running too.

Weather was around 20 degrees and partly cloudy. Testing again today when it is forecast to be 23 and sunny.

Maybe slightly quicker times but the Ferrari seemed more temperature sensitive that the Red Bulls.

I think it is tarmac temperature that might be key which depends on sunshine more so than air temp perhaps.

You are probably right and it's sunny already here.

I noticed that Autosport carry very quick reports on F1 testing.

Worth a look later in the day.
