Hyundai i10 or Dacia Stepway

Featured Replies

I'm looking to change my 8 year old fabia for either a Hyundai i10 or Dacia Sandaro Stepway both petrol.

Having owned 3 fabia's in 11 years its time for a change , I've had test drives in both and both have 5 years warranty and breakdown cover.

Which car should I go for ?

  • This argument could rage on forever. If dacia are that bad why would Renault put their name to them. Plus they wouldn't be sold in Europe if they aren't safe. Lots of people slated Skoda when they wen

Out of those two, I would go for the i10, some very good deals on Carwow.

If you will never need boot space, and can ignore the interior and the tinny noise of the 3 cylinder sewing machine up front, then the i10 is for you.

SWMBO thought it better than the Up!/Citigo/Mii, but ultimately bought a new Ibiza for less cash and got (in her words) "a proper car for the same money"

Having not driven or even sat in either car I'm going purely on aesthetics, the Dacia is a pretty good looking car and would be where my hard earned would be going...

Stepaway is a good bit bigger than the i10... so if similar deal to be had thats wha id do

(Well id do neither as neither suit my needs, but... hypothetically ;) )

My Son has just bought a Dacia Sandaro. He loves it

I spoke to my local mechanic and the auto electrician who have both fixed my fabia over the years, they both said don't touch the Dacia!!! So Hyundai it is !

Did it cross your mind that the mechanic and auto electrician that are in business got work fixing your Fabia so want to continue getting work,

maybe they do not want to be turkeys voting for Christmas.

What cars is it that they drive?

My mates wife has a new 110 which they are both delighted with, no experience of any sort with Dacia but they do look nice for the money I have to say.

My mechanic is near retirement and the auto electrician is in his late 50's so as I'm getting it serviced at a dealer for the warranty period they would have both retired.

When my car when for its MOT my mechanic said either buy Japanese/Korean or spend no more than £1000 on a car and run it into the ground, I think he was having an off day lol.

He's drives a 5 year old Ford Focus Convertible he paid £2000 cause the roof was knackered and Ford didn't want to know apparently, he spent £20 on new bolts and got the roof working.

Can you state neither? Surely there are more dynamic vehicles available that are likely to hold their value more and cost next to nothing to buy? But different strokes and all that.

If I was forced into buying either of these two cars it would be the Dacia Stepway and that's only because I know where the car has come from (the tried and tested parts bin of Renault and Nissan).

I would sooner have a skoda citigo or fiat panda (I feel dirty saying that but less dirty than I would with the Dacia or i10). Can a Ford Fiesta with some miles be taken into your car choices the chassis is sublime and the engine selection is about bang on.

Ask your mechanic how many Dacia's he has fixed. Then ask him how many Skoda's he's fixed. I nearly bought a stepway but got swayed into buying a Octavia on a 12 plate. Wish I'd bought the dacia. 1 month into ownership needed a new condenser new timing chain and tensioner. Still sounds like a bag of spanners on start up. Only got 28000 miles FSH. Luckily i bought it from a main dealer so got 12 month warranty. If you do buy a Dacia you get up to 7 years warranty. It looks OK it's cheap to run loads more space than a i10 and the parts are cheap.

Id guess neither of them have touched a Dacia since they are all still under warranty.

I go for the dacia since its bigger and looks better than the i10

The dacia is running proven renault parts. Yes theres loads of jokes about french cars etc but theu are trying to break the market. Not going to risk selling rubbish and it all coming back. On value...it gets my vote.

Just clicked over 20K since April in my Dacia Logan ie same chassis as the Sandero and Stepway ie Clio Mk 3.

Tried the diesel, awful ie noisy and slow, tried the 900 turbo-petrol, relavation.  Quicker, pleasant to drive, averages 50 mpg, even driven at the speed limits, 600 litres of space.  Did not like the standard steering wheel so got a nice leather cover for it.  Did not like the 15" 185 tyres on the Logan so got the 16" ones ie 205 from the Stepway, looks much better with those.

Didn't like the fact that the Stepway, in petrol form, paid higher road tax.  Went for Laureate spec with MediNav, so has biult in sat nav, phone, media and all for either £10K or £200pm for a 20K miles pa lease.  There is nothing else on the market that comes close for an all-purpose car. It cruises at indicated 80 easily, does over 110, quite and relaxed revs ie 3k ant 75 mph, revs to 6.25K.  It is what the Skoda brands use to be 20 years ago ie decent engineering and top value.

It's thanks to lol-lol that my son bought his Dacia, he loves it to bits.  If you don't spend a lot you don't loose a lot. 5 years warranty and breakdown cover, it's a no brainer

As lol-lol says in 10 years we will all be driving a Darcia

I work at Hyundai dealers doing parts and Warranty being my main job , the reason why I cover parts? Because there is not enough work to have a full time person found it

I went in to the job not wanting to like them , but yes they are growing on me

My fella works in a garage and he said they had an I10 in for a service and said for the money they are not bad

He did also tell me that the Dacia is a Renault in drag , and parts are mega expensive

Me , I would do the I10

You could even pop down see us , I will do warranty for free lol

The Dacia Logan, Sandero and Stepway are Clio Mk 3s based which was European car of the year for a couple of years about 10 years ago but they now with the latest engines like the 3 cylinder turbo petrol and ABS, ESP as standard.   I find spares very reasonably priced ie like the bigger 16 inch wheels etc. I bought.  My dealer in Worcestershire is fantastic ie Savilles, I do not like dealing with the big car chains such as Blade, Bristol Street as from my thirty years dealing with such networks I find they invariable much inferior to the family run companies.  I take my Skoda (Savilles are ex-Skoda but changed to Dacia-Renault when Skoda went all corporate) and my Jag there, they get any part and do any work.

Renault have won half of the last quarter century's F1 titles and along with their alliance with Nissan are the leading producer of electric cars too so not too bad a pedigree.

I like Korean cars, like my Chevy badged thing.  Very well designed.   Bit bland and it is like they design cars in the same way they design phones and everything else ie slightly soulless but very proficient.  Though I gather the i10 is actually built in India, Mozambique or Turkey rather than Korea.  Most EU sold Dacias are built in the EU I gather.

What's depreciation like on Dacia or i10? Actually the Logan looks like 39/40% at 3 years which is as good as Skoda/SEAT

However, would you put your kids in a Logan / Duster with a poor 3 star NCAP rating??

Edited by camelspyyder

Good point on the ncap rating 3 out of 5 is not great. However the sandero has 4 out of 5 which is ok marked down on pedestrian safety.

I think if I was in the market for dacia I'd go for the stepway.

Friend who is a panel beater says Dacia are paper thin. Dont think I'd put me little ones in one. Don't like the i20 but def a better car

I love how all these people have friends that are mechanics, panel beaters, auto electricians that say Dacias are poor, expensive, thin? All car panels are much the same thickness! If your panel beater mate wants a car with thick panels (goodness knows why? Just a heavy uneconomical car) then the only car he'll consider/recommend would be a Volvo 240 series.

That said, I better sell my Peugeot sharpish! God forbid some of the body panels are actually plastic!!!!! Your mate would have kittens if he worked on it!

Well these are the 'New Dacia', Renault Dacia.

My only real issue is the Dacia Duster, odd seating position as far as i am concerned, but that is maybe just me,

and after waiting for them to be released and getting excited at the thought of a Automatic none were available in the UK.

But as to the Original Dacia cars,

Romanian Business People travelled around Europe buying up Dacia where ever they could for Spares or Repairs.

I quite fancy getting one and then putting an interesting Engine / Gearbox in it, modern underpinnings and original look patina.

Must have a look see if any can be had still at 'Much Cheapness'.

Which original Dacia cars? Would that be the Renault 8 or Renault 12? They only built Renaults for the first 25 years - and then 10 years of awful looking home made products before going back to Renault.  If they hadn't wasted the 90's with their locally designed and made heaps they'd be a far more established option in the EU markets by now.  I think their brand has a real chance of catching on, although it may take a while like it did for Hyundai and Kia.
