Officially a 4x4

Featured Replies

I'm picking up my new Yeti today so yesterday evening was changing over my insurance. My current car is an Alfa Giulietta which is 170bhp and insurance group 25. My Yeti is 110bhp and insurance group 15. My premium has gone up by a fair chunk as a result of the change. I queried this with them and they said it's because I have gone from a "medium performance car" to a "premium 4x4". So I guess that means my Yeti is officially a 4x4 (even though it's actually only 2wd in my case). :-)

I take it you have told them it's not a 4*4?

I wonder how much you'd pay on a brand new policy though? Substantially less I'd have thought!

My response would have been 'it isn't, it's a mid range 2 wheel drive crossover'

Which insurance company? I would get on the comparison sites and compare your old and new car, gather evidence and call back, if need be being prepared to cancel your policy and go elsewhere. I came from a Volvo V40 D4 (so 170 bhp) to a 110TDI and my insurance went down slightly with Admiral, even with going from a 4 year old car to brand new.

john999boy is right: shop around for the best quote you can find on the yeti, and compare the price difference with the cost of ending your current cover early. (You should do this anyway, but especially if the current insurer comes out with nonsense like yours has.)

I just renewed for $A418........ down from 639 after getting a quote from a competitor for 443.

A massive difference.

I never simply renew if there is a significant jump.

I always do shop around when it's time to change and only went with AXA who I'm with now because they were cheapest on the Alfa. Although the annual cost is technically quite a bit higher I've only got a couple of months to go until the annual renewal so only had to pay the difference and will shop around again then.

I just thought their classification was interesting and made me smile (and yes, it is correctly listed as 2wd).

More than likely because the person on the end of the phone hasn’t got a clue so thought ‘I will blow some smoke up there arse whilst mugging them off’ and they will be happy to pay more  :D

I would have explained it is a 2WD not 4WD and as for premium... really it’s a ‘kin Škoda ... you know the budget brand from VAG!!

Just got my renewal from Skoda Insurance.

£217 inc ins' tax.

I'm still looking to see if I can get it cheaper.   :D   I'll give them a ring ....

A few years ago I swapped from a 170 bhp Tiguan to a 12 year old Saab 93 diesel.

Premium was higher......it's all about risk....or perceived risk

My 140 Yeti is about £200 from LV

If the insurance company say the car is a 4 by 4 and it isn't, you need to tell them that.  Ask to speak to a manager if you get nowhere with the call centre person.

Looks like they have a list of Yeti models with differing insurance costs and simply decided to charge you the highest premium they could find on their list.  As said earlier, if they don't believe you, go somewhere else.  Either way I would try somewhere else anyway if simply to prove to yourself that your current insurance company are mistaken.  Best of luck.

You're all missing the point I was trying to make. I will be shopping around in a couple of months when it's my renewal time. I change insurance companies all the time to get the best deal and the company I am with was the cheapest for my last car. I only mentioned the increase in premium as this was the reason why I asked them for more detail.

They said my car was a 4x4 which I thought was interesting for all those that think crossovers aren't 4x4s. The insurance company know it's 2wd and not 4wd.

Like I say, I thought it was an interesting aside that they described the Yeti in this way and not me looking for insurance advice.

My local car wash also know it's a 4X4 and charge accordingly even though it's a fair bit smaller (though taller)

than the Superb estate I used to own.

I questioned it and they just pointed to the 4X4 badge on the hatch.

Mine did that as well, so I don't go there any more.

What would happen if you got a Citigo badge and stuck it over the 4x4 badge?

Jim

.....the 4X4 badge on the hatch.

I'm reading this as: You say you have a 2016 1.2 2WD, yet it has a 4x4 badge.  Have I missed something here?

GreenlineIIestate's signature says he has a 1.4 4wd and he said he has a 4x4 badge

I have a 1.2 TSI 2wd

I think you're mixing our comments up?

Too many late nights...

What I need is cocoa.  I'm off to Bob'sCorner :coffee:

Funny really that a non 4x4 gets called a 4x4 by the insurance company because of its shape and appearance being a crossover, yet my Golf which is a 4x4 just says car and there is no mention of it but my insurance group of 34 is correct.

TBH sounds like bull....t by the person on the other end thinking up something to keep you happy.

Premium 4x4 is not where I would place a Yeti but that is my opinion.

Hope you get a decent quote at renewal time in a couple of months :)

Exactly the same trouble I had with mine.. My current insurers refused to insure me on my "4x4"...

I've  never seen any sense in those "self tuners" who remove all the badges but this is a reason.!
