Silly servicing questions

Featured Replies

Service Centre "would you like us to replace you brake pads, you only have 20% left on the front and maybe 25% on the back. It'll need them before its next service"

Me "Does the car not have brake pad wear sensors like the Mk2 ?"

Service Centre "Yes it's got sensors but, it's inconvenient to keep bring the car in and out of Service Centre"

Me "FFS not to me it isn't, I'll be there in 20 mins to collect it"

Service Centre "Oh it might not be ready that soon, it has a lower priority in the Service Wash Bay"

Me "Wash it and I'll kill ya obviously, I didn't make myself clear this morning"

Believe it or not I still prefer to use the Service Centre than the Dealerships as there is less bull**** but, the device is getting smaller or perhaps I haven't been in a Dealership recently enough

What's a 'Service Centre'?

My Skoda dealer put an advisory on an MOT to suggest the front discs were heavily corroded.

Three MOT's later and it still has the same discs.

A dealer that's given up selling cars.

The vw dealership near the inlaws shut up shop, sold the land for housing and opened a "service centre" on an industrial estate on the edge of town.

Do they have support from VW or do they simply take their equipment and expertise and go it alone? Wouldn't that be an independent?

They have other locations where they are still flogging VWs and they are an authorised repairer etc.  They just took all the garage equipment and put it in an industrial unit.

This kind of thing gets up my goat.  It happened when I bought the Superb and the garage said, before I picked it up, that my brakes were down to 'about a third' and would I like them changed?

No thanks said I, which I have to say somewhat flummoxed them.

'Service Wash Bay' doesn't exactly inspire confidence, does it    I think my local Skoda use 'Intaclense' or words to that effect and having been there, I'd rather they didn't make eye contact with my car, let alone be allowed in the same geography (read town) as it.

My last MoT had an advisory saying front brake pads 70% worn. But when he gave me the paperwork the tester said they'll be fine.

I think he just fancied a change from the usual advisory about the engine undertray.

I always make a point of telling them NOT to wash my car! Why would I want someone rubbing scratches into the paint then stripping it with truck wash? I tell them they can do the inside though.

There seem to be more of these 'Service Centres' cropping up.  This happened with my local dealer who stopped selling Skodas but continued with selling VWs.  Same technicians and lets face it the cars are very similar underneath.  Just don't believe every bit of 'advice' they offer!

I've not had this experience with Skoda yet but its common practise at many garages.

With my previous Mondeo's the garage would always tell me "Ford Recommends..." replacing the air-conditioning gas, brake pads, brake disks, windscreen wipers, water pump, timing belt...

I'm sure they have a long list of parts ordered by ease of change versus profit made in return.

Depending on how they are doing they will add additional recommendations as needed to keep the cash flowing.

My nearest "local" dealer (West Worthing area) has become part of JCB.

They were West Sussex Motors, then became Euro Skoda.

Recently I got a communication that another branch has opened up about 5 minutes away from me in Portslade, and known as JCB Van Centre (very encouraging!)

I don't think they actually sell Skodas (yet) but apparently undertake repairs and servicing, in an official capacity.

To be honest I think I'd still rather have the longer drive over to West Sussex Motors. But really I no longer know who is what or why!!

Camberley Service Centre was the particular one in question for me, "selling up" I believe is the term and whilst it may appeal to those whom beleive their time is more important than their money I'd rather save a few quid which I can make work to earn me a few more quid before I actually need to spend it on new brakes.

TBH. I'm Fn surprised there's anything left of my brakes after 20k but, thats just down to driving style I guess or, maybe I'm getting old !!!!

I've had this before from a dealership. Discs and pads need replacing I got forty thousand out of the discs and twenty from the pads. I also had it on tyres.

I'll think you'll find only the vRS has brake pad wear sensors in the UK - another backward step from the O2
