First diesel car you remember

Featured Replies

First diesel car you remember seeing, apart from a black taxi? For me, it was one of these

15 years ago, neighbours citroen bx :o

Our VW Jetta, PNL 10Y. A Formel E, IIRC. What a slug.

The first diesel car I saw was probably a Ford Sierra or Escort diesel kicking out great clouds of black smog at the time - this was probably about 20 years ago when I was 4 years old.

First diesel car I drove was the car I leant to drive in - a Citroen ZX 1.9 normally aspirated (asthmatic) diesel. That car was an absolute slug :thumbdwn:

Mind you my driving instructor used to tell me rag the ****** off it though, especially when joining dual carriageways  It would do an indicated 67mph maxxed out in 3rd gear  I never found what 4th was capable of I was always told to slow down :D

Funny moments include out accelerating ch4v creatures from roundabouts (on the directions of my instructor  :D ) in this car which was fully decked out in L plates and driving school boards  That really used to annoy them

First Diesel I remember for sale NEW was the 1978 Ford Granada. However I also vaguely remember the Peugeot 404 (but I may be wrong here).

First half decent diesel was the VW Golf Mk 1 Circa 1979. Pretty basic (didn't even have a temperature gauge) but at least it offered acceptable performance.

Going WAY WAY back - my dads transit 2.4 - yorkie diesel, dont bother on a cold day.... after an engine change it was better, v6 3.0 capri engine and when that blew (too much right foot) a jag v12 lump. My first diesel was a '72 2.25 Landrover? :)

My Fiat Tipo 1.9 TDi. What a car. It broke down on the way home from the dealer !! Bits fell off and then a Muppet rep in a Cavalier ran into the back of me. That was the last straw.

My next diesel was a 2003 Renault Megane. Got rid. Yuk !! Pile of crap

Merc taxis. Not sure about private cars. Peugeot 403 maybe :rubchin:

My dads 1983 Pug 305 GLD. Pile of crap!

First Diesel - Ford Sierra 2.3D Ghia(!) parked up outside school as a small kid. Looked smart being a new car and all that but gave me a fright when it started up. I can't imagine how horrid they must have been to drive.

First diesel car - Pug 306 DTurbo. Went to a VW dealer looking for a Polo 1.4 and saw it at the far end of the lot. A test drive and I was smitten...

Our old Y reg mk1 Golf, it was a taxi in a previous life. It did well over 250,000 miles before we sent it to car heaven :(

First one I remember, probably a Landy Defender

First one I remember being decent? Probably the 306 DTurbo (as above). Remember a friend of a friend having one, a 1995 N-plate. To me that was the first effort at a 'performance' or sporty diesel model. Looked near identical to the XSI 306 of the time, not sure how it measured up performance wise though, but was more economical ;)

The DTurbo was damn near identical to the 1.6XS and both had 90bhp. It wasn't hot hatch fast : 0-60 in about 11.5s and 110ish top speed however the DT was much quicker in gear. Cheap to insure at group 5. Mine was great to drive but the build quality was ... erm ... typically French.

The DTurbo just stuck in my mind at the time, as well as looking back on it, as the first diesel car I remember not to be put in a taxi, and/or where economy and nothing else was paramount. A landmark car I would say...

Next door neighbour's VW Rabbit. Deafeningly loud thing, when she reversed it up the driveway and the engines hit the right revs all the windows in our house vibrated and rattled. We always knew when she was going out or coming home!

First diesel I can remeber was a mates Marina fitted with the engine out of a Post Office van. God only knows what the weght of the engine did to the fine handling of the Marina!!!!

First diesel worth remembering - Citroen ZX TD Volcane

FThe first diesel I can remember driving was a Peugeot 305 van circa 1992. What a bucket ! Very unrefined, no acceleration and 80 mph flat out !

Ford Sierra 2.3D Ghia

My dad had one of these when I was little, can't remember exactly how old it was though. He always used to joke about the fact everyone thought it was a taxi coming, as at the time taxi drivers were the only people who bought them!

Having said that it wasn't a bad car I don't think. Dad was certainly impressed at it's economy, of course this was when diesel was much cheaper to buy as well. He's not had a petrol car since.
