I have the wrong spare wheel - check yours

Featured Replies

I have an SE L and an FOC option is a 17" wheel.  225/45 from memory, which I have.

I was looking in the boot today as I've only had it a week and I wanted to check I have the security adaptor key - and guess what, the spare wheel is a 16" not a 17".

Dealer fail - yet again.  I'll be calling them first thing in Monday morning!

Is the FOC  Spare wheel option a 17" Alloy wheel or a steel wheel.

16" Steel wheel and a 16" tyre is usually the Spare wheel size. You can't get a Skoda 17" steel wheel

That sounds correct to me.

I believe that is correct, a 16" steel spare.

It will be of the same diameter even though it is 16" so safe to use.

Our Ibiza is the same 16" alloys and a 15" steel spare.

Others may need to correct me but I think only the vrs needs a 17" spare wheel due to brake caliper size. Therefore a 17" FOC spare for an SEL seems to be unlikely.

I know it's confusing because when I bought all my previous including current Vrs the option said full size spare wheel, when they were not

My Vrs Spare is a Space Saver, it's like a Motor Bike Tyre on a thin Steel wheel. Reason I believe is you can't get a 17" steel Skoda wheel, They ain't going to chuck in a FullSize Alloy + tyre for free

I'm pretty sure you're right that only the VRS comes with a 17"

I got a 16" spare aswell. Totally normal, unless its vRS, as other already has stated.

My vRS spare is an 18"

2013 vRS tdi with a factory space saver - size is 125/70R18.

However as previously stated by an earlier poster, if the rolling circumference is the same (ie the tyre is taller) the actual wheel size doesn't seem to matter for an "emergency tyre".

Seems like the dealer will confirm that it should be a 16" not a 17"...

In that case I'm pretty sure I'm wrong and the VRS is 18!

Me too!

18" alloys on the Superb but 16" 'full size spare'. However, offset and stud pattern good, plus rolling circumference very similar (c. 1.5%) to the standard alloys so it'll fit.

Surpringly the Superb 16" spare is actually a better fit for our 17" wheeled Yeti as the rolling circumference comes out almost identical to its origami alloys. Skoda saving money by a one size fits all approach perhaps?

ETyres (and others!) have a good tyre size calculator if you want peace of mind.

Customer fail I'm afraid.

Yep, I've had 2 O3's with 18" rims (neither of them a vRS) and you get a 16" steel spare with a 205/55/R16 spare on a 6.5J rim. It is technically a 'temporary' spare wheel and you are limited to 50(?)mph (same as a space saver, as it is a different width and profile to the other wheels) with it fitted - there should be a yellow warning sticker on it to that effect, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was not on there.

Well, the brochure shows two spare options on page 28... one for 16" and one for 17 or 18.

Note that all thee have different order codes, they must be different sizes.

I quote:

Temporary space saver spare wheel (for 17" or 18" wheels)   PJA / PJC         £83.33      £100.00

Temporary steel spare wheel (for 16" wheels)                         PJB                   £83.33      £100.00

All the space savers I've ever had on Vag cars have been 18" regardless of 15" 16" or 18" wheels

I was surprised to see a full sized spare in the Superb

So you would rather have a bicycle wheel instead of a car wheel as your spare?

They are the same (within a few percent) circumference so I don't see what the issue is?

You won't get a 17" spare, they don't do them.

16" is bob on....its technically a "full size" spare as its a 205/55 R 16....will have nigh on the same rolling circumference just not as wide.

Its exactly what my Elegance with 17's has.

I believe cars with 18's get an 18" wheel but it is actually a spacesaver i.e not at all wide and like a unicycle....it needs a big wheel though in order for the spare to clear the 340mm brakes on the front on the vRS.

From this wording I take it to mean the wheel is standard but with possibly a deeper tyre wall to atone for the larger circumference. I wouldn't have expected an 18inch spare steel wheel on my VRS. I think the 16 is a bog standard wheel used across the range.

As I said a few posts ago, I've had 2 O3s with 18s (non vRS) and they both came with 16" steel spares. It is technically full size (ie not a bike wheel) but can only be classed as a temporary spare as it is a different profile to the other wheels, so you should also observe the speed reduction as per a space saver (bike wheel).

I know which one I would rather have out of a 16" car wheel or an 18" bike wheel .............
