First replacement tyres - VRS TSI Combi

Featured Replies

Just replaced the front tyres, managed to get 18k out of the Skoda supplied Bridgestone Potenza S001's.

They had a bit of life in them but were really struggling for grip in the cold/wet, was surprised to get so many miles out of them! They are a rather hard compound and never inspired much confidence in anything other than bone dry roads.

They've been replaced with Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3's

Still got the original Bridgestone's on the back, wondering whether to swap them onto the front now, or wait a few k?

I put my new F1 Asym2 on the back and just worn out the Conti Sport 2s so I could get more!!

Near tyres on the rear is meant to ensure you don't suffer from unexpected oversteer in a front wheel drive car. However, I put new tyres on the front as I want the best possible braking and traction.

I to found standard fit Bridgestone's poor in the wet and even dry in poor roads, Eventually put Eagle F1's on the front. What an improvement, but they do wear quicker as expected.

What I don't understand is if a particular Tyre is not good at it job of gripping the road, how do they pass various regulations to meet legal requirements. After all they don't come with warnings such as "beware do not use these in the rain". Insurance companies could if the wanted to up the premiums depending what tyres are fitted

I think it is all a question of context.  We have seen some major steps forward in the quality of tyres over the years (and the demands that are placed upon them) - what we consider 'average' now would have been considered good a few years ago.

I'm doing my best to wear out my S001s and replace them with Goodyear F1s!

Is that on a diesel dsg or Manual??

But still not bad either way apart from Wet grip performance.

UniRoyal RS3, will be going on after the winter. They seemed to grip well on my mk2FL (same 19" wheels going onto the mk3).

Fairly cheap too, but some reviews suggest they wear quickly.

Not that the above is a suggestion to what to go for, just what's going on mine instead of the factory fit tyres.

Petrol, manual.

My MK2 Petrol VRS was lucky to get 10k miles, out of a set of front tyres

I'm in need of a full set as switched mine around so i replace them all at the same time.

Been quoted £85 a corner for the S001's on standard 18" wheels.

Done 23k in less than 18 months so want a blend of life and grip... Should get to 24k I think

maybe the diesel is harder on tyres due to the higher torque lower down ?? It certainly spins the wheels very easily..

Oh, dear. Used to be one for using the power off roundabouts as well.

But it doesn't sound like you have done too bad for 23k

Most of my journeys seem to Bristol to Heathrow these days and 6 times in January!

A and B roads are for the Old Scoob on the drive... No worries about grip or traction with that..

Got 11k out the front Potenza S001's in 6 months........

I'm hoping to need a full set in another 6 months so I can give the cross climates a bash

I'm thinking of changing mine this week (S001's) after driving around on the soaking roads yesterday.

They've covered just over 7k miles and the grip is poor at best, to be honest I haven't been too impressed with them from new.

I'm going to change all four and probably going down the Goodyear Efficient grip route (had them on my Mk1 VRS) as I was impressed by them, surprisingly Kwik Fit are coming cheapest at £82 a corner.
