LED Number Plate Lights (Success story)

Featured Replies

Hello Everybody, I have changed all the interior lights to LED so thought I would have a go at number plate lights. Didn't want to go down the LED bulb route as the Polo has a LED number plate light option and this is VAG group after all. Did a bit of research and found this part number:

3AF 943 021 A

I ordered them from Amazon as the effort of going to the dealership was just to much, cost £24.12 all in, all looks genuine but that's for you to decide, your dealer will be happy to help.

When trying to fit them there are little tabs that stop them from fitting into the hole (you can see the little nic in the left tab where it was stopping it from fitting) The fitting will fit if placed in the opposite way to the original fitting but this then results in the light being directed away from the number plate.

In my opinion they had to be fitted the same way as the original fittings this meant the light was directed onto the number plate. To do this though the tabs had to be removed, i just used some side cutters.

The only other thing to note when fitting the cable on the left fitting is very, very tight, the shorter the cable the more they save I guess but it was fiddly removing it and then fitting it into the LED fitting, oh and it tells you how to remove the fitting in your handbook.

After fitting, switched them on and both worked with no errors on the dash, so if you haven't got a VCDS then not to much of an issue.

Plugged in the VCDS and had the following error in 09 cent elec:

1 Fault Found:
12307 - License Plate Light
          B12CA 01 [009] - Electrical Failure
Confirmed - Tested Since Memory Clear
             Freeze Frame:
                    Fault Status: 00000001
                    Fault Priority: 2
                    Fault Frequency: 2
                    Reset counter: 161
                    Mileage: 2832 km
                    Date: 2016.03.05
                    Time: 20:11:29

So using the Octavia III VCDS adaptation info found hear I changed the 2 adaptations:

Address 09:6C0 937 090 B recoded (ADP-(1)-Leuchte25KZL HA60-Type_Of_Load_25) from 2* 5W  to allgemeine LED mit Open Load Diagnose

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Address 09:6C0 937 090 B recoded (ADP-(6)-Leuchte25KZL HA60-Dimming_AB_25) from 100  to 127

I cleared the errors on 09 Cent Elec, ignition off, back on and lights on in all configurations (Auto, side and always on) and no errors logged... yay

The final result:

Now the disclaimers, you perform any of these changes at your own risk. Briskoda does not accept any responsibility for your actions, and neither do I! If you aren't sure, don't do it! Ensure you have a full controller map before you make any changes and keep that log a running. I'm a VCDS novice working from the superb/amazing knowledge found on Briskoda and some help from Google translate.
