Wiring in a dashcam on a Yeti

I plug my dashcam into the cigarette lighter socket but the power to this socket is permanently on which means the camera is running when the car is locked and unoccupied.

Please advise me if it is possible to alter the power to the lighter socket such that the power is switched off once the ignition key is removed.

Also the power socket in the rear boot is always on which is good if you have a cool box attached. So my question is: is it possible to have the power to the lighter socket switched off but on in the rear boot once the key is removed. Thanks

You can't change the way the sockets work. What you can do is install a fuse tap connected to an ignition switched fuse and power the camera from that.

If you search there are several posts re. using a piggy back fuse holder connected to the rear wiper fuse in the in-dash fusebox.

This is what I used to connect a (female) power adapter to connect the power lead.

I use this system for my Blackvue DR650-2CH.
I connected to a live feed in the fusebox, didn't want to use the sig socket.

I used a Chinese job off fleabay, demounted the top box, drilled a 22mm diam hole for the socket etc

cheap and cheerful, mine is in use all the time - needed to file a small round slot at the rear/screen side of the box for the cable to exit when powering a sat nav

I've a power magic pro on order.  

Will piggyback it from an always on in the fuse box so it records while parked, but it'll shutdown when the voltage reaches a certain trigger.

I used a piggy back fuse to the rear wiper to power a USB box in the dash storage box. The camera is wired under the dash, around the screen and roof trim to my dash cam. The box also powers my Galaxy S6 which sits in a Brodit mount the centre of the dash above the central vents.

There a thread on here somewhere about how to do this.

The dash cam is mounted behind the mirror, the cable tucked into the headlining to the drivers side and then behind the A-Pillar trim and drops into the fuse box where the 12V plug is plugged into the above mentioned socket. 

 

It also then means that if needed, I can use a 12v splitter to then power both the dash cam and satnav.

 

Hate trailing wires over the dashboard!!

I use a Volton split charge relay (PCT volton ZR1220). Basically chicken in pies out  (Live and earth in - switched live and earth out )

 

I've wired a 12v plug on the inlet and a 12v socket on the outlet - I use it in the summer to run a coolbox when on holiday in the summer - works a treat - turns on coolbox a few seconds after starting the engine and turns it off a few seconds after stopping

 

I could have rewired the cars 12v socket to incorporate a split relay but my car is still under warranty 

I have done similar to my car, dash cam fits to the windscreen behind the rear view mirror so is out of sight and I have taken the supply wire through the headlining and down the A pillar to the fuse box where I have put a piggy back fuse holder into the rear wiper supply fuse. That works a treat.

For the mechanically challenged (i.e. hamfisted) like me, its best to leave it to the dealer.  Mine will have no wires showing, and will look as if it was factory fitted.  Mind you I will be paying for the privilege.

Bare in mind there isn't much room behind the rv mirror for a dash cam to fit.

How will you judge "factory fitted"? "Unobtrusive"? "No wires showing" ? ......

However it really isn't difficult to hardwire in if you look at a few youtube videos and posts on here and other forums.

I know because, athough not being an expert I hardwired mine in to the dash fuse box with a hidden cable around the windscreen trim.

20 mins, cost less than a tenner including a cheap connector crimper off ebay.

Same here, but for power to a satnav cradle, following a post from another member here.

Hmm - equaliser on a Vauxhall Viva for me  :notme:

Last car I "meddled" with the electrics was my first Freelander, and that was to fit a set of auxiliary driving lights; just a simple relay and an internal switch. Can't even do that on the Yeti without specialist gubbins.

Hi just joined looking for tips and have to say I have just got off the phone with skoda UK chap who stated that the 12volt sockets are NOT permanently live and unless a hardwire was done by a dealership the warranty could be affected. Any help as to which fuses I can use to a permanent live would be helpful
