Is Dacia the new Skoda?

If they have joint development relationships in a world of shrinking stand alone manufacurers....best of luck.

I recently heard Skoda (and to a lesser extent Hyundai and Kia) are forging themselves a new market segment of "premium economy".   Much like the rise of Aldi and Lidl in the supermarket sector, a l

My Son has just bought a Dacia Sandero 1.2 75BHPish Petrol and he loves it. Just over 6K I think he paid.   Bought it on Finannce to get the 5 year warranty/Full RAC cover then paid the Finannce off

  • Is Dacia the new Skoda? Could be....new models will certainly push value and brand upwards as more and more folk realise that badge snobbery exists for all the wrong reasons nowadays. The 'premium' br

A joint development?.

No, they just buy engines from Renault and fit them in their cars.

Well I guess that the agreement to share engines that will meet future CARB standards will be acceptable to both.

Renault (with Nissan) own 3.1% of Daimler/Mercedes.

They have shared platform with Smart (Four/Twingo) as well as the engine supply to Mercedes.

Ryeman,

Maybe.

First we might hear more on those taking legal actions or threatening to on the claimed low emission from the Blu-tec engines but then that is only at low temperatures.

I'd heard about that Mercedes/Renault tie up in idle gossip over a beer or two (and had not considered stretching the idea to say that Dacia engines are in Mercs :D ) as one of my French brothers in law works within RD&D at Renault - albeit on the HR side....but the number of development 'mules' they have had in to try and 'play' with using other engine fitments has been quite astounding as more and more companies seek to save costs by buying into each others product lines and parts bins.

Mercedes A&B class as mentioned, Jaguar XE (!) and even a flood of VAG group cars post the 'diesel output' crisis - I suppose it might be cheaper to buy in non-cheating engines than it would be to redevelop existing units and software???  All unofficial and pure speculation of course.... ;)

All car manufacturers get hold of competitor models to strip down and look at/analyse - thats been going on for decades however this new found 'I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine' relationship could mean that many of us will be driving mashups (in a good way) over the ensuing years. Just look at how folk are clambering over Tesla to use their technology in their product lines....Elon Musk rubbing his hands with glee as companies queue to buy in to his product technology.

Hubris stopped Piech accepting a joint engine development with Mercedes......as reported.

Didn't work out all that well.

The Volkswagen Group bought into Suzuki and got the knowledge of the Suzuki / GM / Fiat technology.

Future technology, Hybrid, Electric Superchargers, Duel Charging, small capacity 2 & 3 cylinder engines etc

Small capacity fuel efficient turbo petrol engines.

Then Suzuki had to get out, fought to get out.

Bought their self totally out finally over night as the Press got to hear of the United States Recalls for Defeat Devices in Volkswagen Vehicles.

Lucky there for Suzuki was it not, ?

handy how they came up with the money to buy back their final shares that day.....

* A woman scorned is a dangerous thing, but a Japanese Car Manufacturer Scorned can bring your downfall.*

Partners even if just in a small way have a very very lucky escape.

Now Suzuki might have given up its research knowledge to VW, but it got some back, and used the Fiat Engines,

*Lucky there not using VW diesels that required Defeat Devices in the ECU's.*

even though Suzuki build the vehicles in Hungary and Audi / VW build their engines in Hungary for VWG.

The newer factories being there building the new Hybrids / Petrol & Diesels.

Also ones that are subject to the Defeat Device scandal.

  • 3 weeks later...

Best tank range yet ie nearly 600 miles out of the turbo-petrol Logan, managed to put 51 litre of fuel it in so it must have been very low.  Driving at National Speed Limit most the time too.

Fuel computer not so good as the VAG one as it refuses to give a estimated mileage as it goes to the last block on the fuel LCD so have to switch to amount of fuel since last fill up and base it on 11 gallons in the tank.

That tank cost £54 where it had been usually £50 or less a few weeks ago.

30K miles coming up soon, half the lease period, hope the Duster with the 1.2 TCE engine and the autoboxes are being launched to as that would make it just about owning a Dacia perfect as a car for these austere times of running at car at 25 pence per mile or so.

Friend of mine has just bought a new Duster dCI 110 4x2 Laureate and it's v decent indeed.

He spec'd his up a bit further still and it still cost him v little.

Drives v well, v perky for a 1.5 diesel, well equipped....of course built to a price but well enough, certainly for what it cost.

Not really my cup of tea personally as I am not a fan of Renaults..or French cars in general but I have to conceed it represents a shed load of new car for not a lot of money...where arguably Skoda doesn't so much nowadays.

Really not a French car, just in the same way that a Skoda or Seat is not a German car!

To me the oily German bits are the important ones.

?

Which parts are those and on what car?

The Skoda is on a German platform withe the oily bits and the sparky bits wouldn't you say?.

Dacia is made in Europe but also in Africa (Morocco), India and South America (Brazil) and a fully integrated part of the $100B Renault conglomerate.

Using the Renault Clio mark 3 chassis, European car of the year in 2005/6 in the main for the models but some of the latest engines.

The Dacia marque is a clearly the new value brand being able to be run for around 20 pence per mile all in.

My local car dealer changed from Skoda/VAG to Dacia/Renault and has not looked back and many of their customers have embraced the change with them, as I have.

Basically a rebodied Renault...so French enough for my tastes George :-)

Perhaps I am a bit brand oriented but if Skoda had no affiliation to the VAG group I probably wouldn't own one.

You have a Vauxhall now have you not so staying with the German quality for the daily driver!

Was built in Russelsheim.....I also didn't buy it so good enough for me.

Good stuff, a GM vehicle built in Germany with shared platforms from PSA,

so as much French as a Dacia really.

Maybe someone knows why Ruesselsheim has 2 different ways to spell it.

"ue" is the equivalent of a u with an umlaut. So if using a non German keyboard you can use "ue" instead of u umlaut

Robots build cars in the main, manufacturers design and choose the materials.

I have left behind the myths that German build better cars, partly due to my work in the aerospace sector with Airbus and the lies of VAG and their dealership practices over the last few years, hoping they will change their ways but no real signs of it yet and these satisfaction surveys tell a different story to the mythology of country and quality.

I've never been in the camp that 'Ze Germans' build better cars....it's about assembly nowadays.

I have to say that I like the fact that my Skoda has Czech ancestory.....and that's one of the reasons why I like it. If it had a VW/BMW or Audi badge on it I would not be so interested possibly. The same does not apply to older models though - it's the new stuff (post 1990) that makes me turn away. An E21 323i, E28 M5, Audi 100 coupe or a Mk1 Golf Gti on a four speed and I'm there ;)

Many brands build good cars. My 'allegiance' from an engineering standpoint, Lotus7 aside, would be Japanese. I think their mechanical engineering is sublime.

But I do love my Skoda 3.6 estate...a good blend.

I'm not even going to dignify that with a response......oh **** I just have haha :-)

1950s Felecia is a think of beauty.....

Lotus 7s, or any Lotus, one of the few cars where a 4 cylinder engine actual was right for the car and not a saddo compromise.....

(though the Espirit with the V8 is probably my favoutite car of all time, with the JPS paint job preferably).

Sadly big V6/V8 may become a thing of the past in the UK as the new car tax laws will make them very expensive to run ie my Jag going from £300 a year road tax to £500 a year and coupled with 33 mpg is getting pricey.
