  • Hydrogen will be the leap forward. Infrastructure, battery technology, and insufficient lithium reserves mean battery power will never become mainstream

  • VAG will find a way to fit complex drive belts that need changing every 4 years and DSG that will be ultra reliable.....

  • Believe it or not, London congestion charge is not an issue for the vast majority of us living in the UK.

^^^^^^ a return trip to the shops for a recharge.

It was always down to the Infrastructure and the need to ‘service’ customers.

I feel an electric explosion coming and the city mayor as the chief salesperson.

Bloody expensive parking in Oxford but could have got 40 kWh of charge for nothing if I had a Leaf 2 or a Zoe !

Details of the new 63 kWh Leaf plus came out yesterday........

https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1120780_2019-nissan-leaf-plus-revealed-226-mile-range-quicker-acceleration

Based on initial information at the car’s introduction at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the Leaf Plus apparently checks all of those line items. It gets more than just a bigger battery and a longer driving range, an anticipated 226 miles (versus 151 miles for the base 2019 Leaf) that's subject to regulatory confirmation. Its motor makes 215 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque—up significantly from the standard Leaf’s 147 hp and 236 lb-ft.

According to Nissan, the higher power allows acceleration that’s nearly 13 percent quicker from 50 to 75 mph, while top speed has been increased by 10 percent (which would bring it back up to around 100 mph).

The Leaf Plus also gets improved 70-kilowatt DC fast charging, up from about 50 kw. Hooked up to a 100-kw CHAdeMO fast charger—hardware that’s as of yet close to nonexistent in the U.S.—the Plus will charge at a total time comparable to the standard Leaf charging at 50-kw DC fast hardware. (Nissan cites about 40 minutes to charge from 0-80 percent.)

^^^^^ and liquid cooling apparently.

Fixed !

Errr, not so fast.

It seems the long range LG Chem version might still have air cooling .

Odd is an understatement.

If it is LG and it might just have some heat dissipation with air fan.

With a 50% increase in electrical capacity it should not heat up so much during charging and discharge/driving so might be OK between charges ie every two/three hours, except in hot countries.

We do not have these issue with our LMP batteries which need to run toastie at 50-60c anyways.

Mercedes have just bought some of our tech for their 400 kWh 12m bus packs.

^^^^ I’m just a bit concerned that fast charging in our “toastie” inland areas in summer might present a problem.

(torturing Carlos Ghosn in order to extract a confession isn’t such good Nissan pr either........and no complaints)

But how much in Euro in to the European mainland as cars are made in Sunderland (first city to vote for BREXIT) as there were 1.4 Euros to the pound before the BREXIT vote and now only 1.1 !

Looks like might be only around 40,000 Euros which was less than £30K when the pound was strong.

Kona 64 kWh ?

Does sound a really good car.

Leaf 2 for Asia-Pacific made in Japan but maybe it could come in cheaper when produced in US or Leaf production moved to China or elsewhere in Asia-Pacific.

It’s hard to see the UK keeping Leaf production going at those prices.

Kona/Niro don’t have a competitor on the horizon when you consider a 500km range for the rumoured money.  Certainly not Leaf.

In Europe, if you do not mind the smaller car, most the time most of us just drive around one person with little luggage, the Renault Zoe, in the upgrade 50 kWh form, which should still be only 28k Euros or around £22k will be the most practical EV at least for commuting IMO.   Range should also in theory be 500 kms but more like 350 km in summer and 250 kms in winter for those who drive without brain plugged in.

I'd not buy another Nissan, the leaf is technically very clever and it drives well but the British build quality is definitely a down side. It has a satnav that is 3 years out of date, the head unit is very low res and laggy so android auto doesn't work properly, and the servicing is a rip off. £149 for a computer diagnostic, screen wash top up and a car wash. Oh and it will be £12 for a courtesy car while they do that "service" and you need to do this every 12 months.

Seriously looking forward to seeing what Skoda do with the MEB platform.
