The battery as the new frontier

Good news.  I would be interested to hear what the technical change is, presumably just plotting and more optimum charging profile and maybe allowing the batteries to run a bit hotter than before.

Some reports I have seen is that the true range of the LEAF 2 40 kw is more like 150-170 miles rather than the shocking 110 miles that the large circulation WhatCar reported when it first came out which was a shocker, along with charge-gate, as it sounds like they did a Clarkson ie almost tried to burn through the battery reserve as fast as possible and did not behave as an owner would in normal circumstances.

We hope the LEAF succeeds as thousands of jobs rely on it for the battery and car assembly here in the UK.

Confirmation of the electrical era  - a lecture:

That last video was an excellent lecture.  I can see big cheap high temp batteries like that being the future for grid storage by power companies rather than lots of little AA rechargeable lithium cells that need to be kept cool.

Yep, they are heavy and cheap so not in the mobile field like lithium, now in oversupply apparently.

Good. Drive through just pampers to laziness.

Speaking of engine idling. I was looking up Westminster EV parking (pay 10min, park for up to 4 hours in an EV), they have a web portal for you to report engine idling. You'll get a fine by parking attendants if you refuse to turn off your engine after been asked. This should be rolled out across the world.

And this is the tip of the iceberg.

There are tens of thousands of home chargers and many more thousands of work chargers.  Has it reached the tipping point?  Not quite and it needs the current petrol stations to have a pair of chargers as a legal minimum for splash or "Zap and GO" ie ten minute charge where one can Zap in 5 to 10 kWh of charge to give the car 20 to 50 miles additional range and the fee for that should be restricted to say no more than 30p per kWh.

Free EV charging at large car parks (lie it is in Oxford) ie in with the parking price, prioirity parking.

Petrol stations numbers will decline quickly when the 208/Corsa, ID and Zoe get launched in a few months time unless they adopt EV charging to keep the dwindling petrol/wiesel customer base popping in for the hydrocarbon fix.

Financial institutions won’t fund against a trend from legislation backed by enthusiastic adoption and that’s why ICE development will stagnate; too many established competitors in a declining market demand and GPFs are just another reason to abandon them.  2030 looms.

Leasing companies will possibly be the ‘canary in the cage’ for conventional production lines.

Battery supply isn’t necessarily resolved if you look at the apparent supply constraints.

Charging Stations with 2,4,6,8 maybe more charging points can  not be compared to a Filling Station that might have that number of pumps with a vehicle at them for less than 5 minutes unless they head in for a quick shop.

In the next few years plenty filling station sites going to be where there are charging stations, and other facilities as they expend or move to new locations and redesign.
