Force regen with VCDS

Featured Replies

Hi guys.

I posted previously about warning lights that I have on my dash. I took it to the garage and had the boost valve in the turbo changed and the DPF was clogged with soot.

I have purchased a ross-tech VAG-COM and a full version of VCDS for my car as the garage were unable to force a regen due to the coolant temperature not being high enough.

I am now trying to start a service regen using VCDS and am struggling to get it to kick in.

My process so far is

Enter security access and enter the code 27971

Enter basic monitoring and start the standing regen mode

Follow the instructions

I now get some I for about remerarures but nothing happens after this

I have left the car running for 30 mins

Can anyone post a step by step guide of doing this or see what I am doing wrong?

Thanks in advance

Can't be much help but at least I can tell you my experience with forced regeneration.  I had DPF warning on but I didn't drive to clear it instantly but I allowed my wife to have some ~2-3 trips and then I got other warnings and I needed forced regeneration (I didn't do it myself, I had help so I won't be able to tell how was it done but I know for sure that guy cleared errors at first). It started smoking badly but was interrupted like ~10 minutes after that - low turbo temperature. Tried to warm up turbo properly but without any success and 2nd attempt wasn't much better.

After all he cleared all messages and suggested me to have harder drive in case it helps. After some while I got DPF warning again but I did everything according to the manual and it disappeared.

As I experienced, after starting forced regeneration it started immediately. Maybe in your case some of these temperatures are way too low (like you mentioned coolant temperature before).

Is it a PD or CR engine?

Hi freedom. Not sure how to tell that it's a 2l TDI and the engine code is cega does that help

Think it's a CR the sticker on the boot says CRDPF

It's a CR, so you can try a regen whilst stationary.  Have you done an autoscan?  Were there any faults?

Car has done 82000

Oil ash volume 0

Soot calculated 50.1

Soot calculated between 33.1 and 35.6

Will post the scan once I get in

Here is the latest scan I have managed to fix the airbag fault which was a broken wire in the door

Soot calculated 50.1

Soot calculated between 33.1 and 35.6

A static regen can only completed when it's below 40g and generally when it's above 45g the DPF should be replaced.

If I were you, I'd be trying to complete a regen while driving as that can be done above 40g although the car may still refuse at over 45g to due to risk of fire.

You need to get the engine up to temperature and then drive between 2000-2500rpm at above ~40mph. If you have a decent length of dual carriageway that's probably the best plan as it'll regen at 60mph in an appropriate gear. While you're doing this, have the laptop connected and monitoring the exhaust gas temps, they should jump to from ~350'C to above 600'C when the car starts an active regen. Assuming it does this, then you should be able to continue driving until both soot values (measured and calculated) hit zero.

Obviously, a passenger should be using the laptop and not the driver :)

It might be worth setting the adaptation channel first but as it needs to regen it shouldn't make much difference.

[security Access - 16]
Enter the Code shown by VCDS next to Adaptation Enabling (e.g. Regeneration while Driving)

Going to try that method for a driving regen. But can anyone take a look at this video and confirm I am indeed using the correct process for the standing regen.

https://youtu.be/JlqWCY5eyko

In case it's impossible what about removing DPF and jet washing it? Some people do it. It's not  recommended as it's said to be unhealthy for the DPF but if you can't loose anything - maybe it's worth a try (if only driving method will fail). Probably you will partly clean your DPF and then some kind of regeneration can be done.
