I don't find the start stop as effective as I thought I might. Quite simply I am rarely stopped long enough for it to be worthwhile, even at traffic lights or in heavy traffic I find the line is nudging forward slowly, I am however often stopped for a few seconds whereby the engine stops and then has to restart 2 seconds later, there is surely going to be a massive increase in starter motor failures with these systems.

I think flybynite overstates the issues, but I do find you need to be extreamly ccareful at junctions/roundabouts etc if trying to accelerate into a gap, can be really dangerous. I find it essential to turn off the system in such circumstances for safety reasons.

I don't think it overstates the issues if it can be "really dangerous" but I do think it can be more of an issue if you do a lot of pulling into fast traffic from standing. Turning the button off each time can be forgotten if you do a lot of short trips.

I found it less of an issue on a manual where you could dip the clutch and let the engine sort itself out. I also found it much less of an issue on previous (MY13 and MY15) Octy 3s

How much it will affect you will depend on the car you have and the driving you do but as far as the OP's question I tend to put it in N a fair bit and I find hill hold saves the foot on the brake quite a lot

That's cos you live in an area like what I do where all traffic flow is closely managed through the use of traffic lights.

Mine is far too sensitive for that, the brake pedal position for the engine to restart has the clutch biting and trying to move forward slightly.  Any further pressure on the brake to pedal to stop the forward motion and the engine stops.  Literally the setup is stopped with a +/- 0.01mm pedal movement tolerance.

This seems to be problem with later models.  Mine is a 2013 model & I have to press quite hard on the pedal to activate s/s

Mines one of the earliest models from 2013. Ordered 1 week after launch.

Look at the M25 and you'll find it.

I found it on the M6 yesterday :).   Still no problem with ASS off and change between D & N as needed.

So you took you bum off or your donkey (ASS) off on the M6. No wonder the M6 has a high accident record.

Well whilst in heavy stop start traffic in eco mode I have took to putting it in neutral and applying the handbrake but I also seem to have developed the situation where I am looking how the traffic is moving and turning the stop start on and off depending how long I am going to be sat still for.

this sounds sensible
