Hello xxx,

If you didn’t know it already, ‘eurotraveller’ is me.

With increasing dismay, I’ve been watching on that forum how the Superb was / is being devalued – in both monetary and image terms – by such heavy discounting. This is clearly contrary to my interest as much as it is yours.

Well I can kind of see your thinking, but that is unwarranted imho. If Skoda are happy to sell their cars to fleet buyers at heavy discount (as they patently are, or they wouldn't have been doing it) then there's not much to add. It just goes to show how relatively massive the profit margins are if they can chop £8k off and still make money. What with VW being a dirty word in the auto industry (at least in customer's eyes) at present, I'd not be surprised if VAG are happy for any sales they can muster. I don't think discounts devalue the brand, after all it's only a Skoda to begin with not a Bentley or a Ferrari. I wouldn't class any of the 'normal' VAG brands as premium, despite the soft touch plastics. Pile 'em high and sell 'em cheap has been going on since forever. Just look at Fords, Vauxhalls et al. for examples. Heck BMW sell fully loaded X5s to fleet for about £13k lol. As UncleWang said, nobody stopped you pressing harder (or shopping around) to take advantage of the same discounts. That would have eliminated the 'devaluing' of your car in future (monetarily speaking).

Here, here.....totally agree, as you say, they are more than happy to offer huge discounts to fleet buyers so why not the private buyer!....sounds very buyerist to me.

True enough, I'd take the discount too if it was from a source in which I absolute confidence. But it's clearly like buying other stuff 'cheaply' online; there's often a catch – in my experience, anyway.

Here's the other perspective again:

I could send Skoda a letter thanking them for finally doing that as I did genuinely feel my car was devalued – not just in monetary terms – by being flogged at such low prices.

Obviously not otherwise you would have used carwow, who once you have the quote you deal exclusively with the dealer of your choice.... just as you did when you paid full whack for your car.... did you really not ask for a discount from them?  :o

I fail to see how your car is going to worth more than someone who paid £8k less than you, the fact that this is / was available just means the you have instantly lost £8k more than the guy who got a decent discount.

If you want / can afford to pay full RRP then thats fine, but pleeaassee don’t then bitch when you realise is worth a lot less than you though simply because you overpaid for it.

As a curve ball maybe SUK knew all along what was going on and it was their strategy to let it happen (as well as selling Joe Public a car specifically aimed at business users!) so there were loads of new Superbs on the road promoting the new model, now there are enough doing this, SUK want to limit the discounts, which is fair enough... the way they have gone about it is very underhand though and ultimately will cost them future sales once this gets out into the public domain.

Very well put....on the back of all this it has left a bad taste in my mouth regarding Skoda so in the unlikely event of being offered my car as before, I will probably tell them where to put it!

I can't believe that you would feel the need to do something like this when there may be a small chance that the last second cancellations punters may have there orders honored hopefully.

Perharps your comments should have been centered more around on how to help them.

I see your email reminds them on who you are perharps you have been in touch with them before re this issue

It would be interesting to collate anonymously what people have paid for different models and if they got them from a dealer or broker,. Then we could get a better picture of price differences between all sources.

It would give people looking to buy an idea of where on the price scale they were when getting a quote.

I'm surprised that people are surprised at this.

The Superb on all accounts have been a huge success for Skoda. That fact that lead times are still quite long suggests demand is still outstripping supply. Skoda don't need to discount models and cutting the supply to the broker industry is a sound business move.

When sales are good at the company I work at, we cut promotional activity to a minimum. It's called market forces.

I think cancelling orders that are already built is a bit harsh, but I guess Skoda have taken the view that the dealership network will still achieve more margin on a pre-reg model compared to these broker deals.

Thank you for that, I do like the BMW's having previously had a couple of 1 series, trouble is...I have to virtually jemmy myself in and that includes the 1/ 3 and 4 series and I'm not fat! also annoys me that virtually everything is an option with so many brands these days, which really adds up when you start speccing it. That's why I'm leaning towards the CX5 sport nav, where paint is virtually the only option.....just a shame the petrol engine seems a little anemic and no four wheel drive which is reserved for diesels as usual...grrrr!

Would / could you fit comfortably into a Golf?

I am fat, & I manage without any problem..................

We managed to secure our Golf R Estate at a good discount, & although it's a class smaller than the Superb 3 it has a very similar power-train & (hopefully) will have better residuals.

As for performance & economy it's too young to be extended fully yet, but it's averaging 32 mpg, goes around corners on rails & seems to be quite nippy.............

PS, I'll admit to keeping my Superb 2 for the times when we do want the extra leg-room, the Golf replaced an Octy vRS instead.

Skoda don't need to discount models

Do you really believe that?

I for one specced the car I wanted and then compared what the competition are offering for the same price.

I got a 21% discount through a broker, had this not been available then for the same money it would no doubt put me in what some consider a more prestigious marque... obviously with said discount.

Thought I would make make a comment on this subject, I purchased my Superb through Carwow back in July last year, I feel that I got a reasonable deal, £2000 Skoda contribution and £2300 discount from Carwow, so a total saving of £4300, not too bad a discount for a new model, the discount covered the cost of all of the extras that I added, and I was happy with that.

I did not achieve the big discounts that others have managed, and I have wondered just how long Skoda would allow this to continue, I also have kept an eye on the used car prices for the new Superb,  I have seen a couple of Superb SEL Exec Hatch 2.0TDI DSG's, going for the price that I paid for mine brand new, so I have been quite pleased and feel that my discount has worked out well for me, the discount has not really had an impact on the value of my car.

Out of interest, my daughter was desperate fro a new car, she has just qualified as a nurse and had a limited budget, my son purchased a new Hyundai i10 a year ago, and got as great deal, with this in mind I asked for some quotes through Carwow for a Hyundai i20 SE, the best discount we could get was £11300, the retail price was £13600, not to bad a discount.

With this information in hand, went directly to our local Hyundai dealer, not only did they match the Carwow quote, they undercut it, she walked away with a new i20 with metallic paint for £10500, so it shows that you can get good deals directly from the main dealers.

Oh yes, a golf is no problem for me.....just the BMW's I have problems with, I did seriously consider the golf r estate, but not meaning to offend you, they look a bit boy racer for my liking and I really don't like the 4 exhaust pipes at the back...looks very tacky to me (likewise the Audi S3), just my honest opinion.

Sadly Skoda have no interest in protecting broker customers as it sends the wrong message.

Waiting to see if all orders though same dealer or if the more modest specs slip through, otherwise I'm shopping again

I had a quote from Carwow for my car with a 4K discount, I did not want to buy from a broker so took the quote to a Skoda dealer and they matched it, no problem.

If you don't ask you don't get.

I did, and they no way near matched! (£8k)

SWMBO's youngest thinks it looks too ordinary, totally lacking in street cred. Whatever that is.........

We can't win, can we?

Inside, it looks like a slightly posh Golf, but with some blue highlights, not an unpleasant place to be in.

The colour choice seems to affect peoples opinions too, we chose Limestone Grey which isn't a boy racer colour at all, & a friend has an R in Reflex Silver, which seems to hide the "R'ness" of the car completely.

As for the quad pipes. the inners are dummies on the estate version, but all real on my Superb, & that's about as far from being a boy-racer as you can get..........

I'm wondering if black heat resisting paint would hide the offending pipes....

Did you have to wait or get it 'off the shelf ' and did you get a discount if you don't mind me asking?

It wasn't - peopled ordered with them and got cars delivered.

We ordered it in 2nd / 3rd week in February, & took delivery on May 5th.

It's optioned is bit, so not so likely that we would have found an in-stock car anywhere.

It was discounted, but directly from a dealer, not a broker.

At the time, Golf R estates were cheaper than R hatchbacks, some sort of internal VW promotion.

I wonder if anyone was successful in getting the 2016 Superb?

Yes, a fair few I think, just rubbish timing for me and a few others!

It’s easy to ask this in hindsight, but were you always completely confident that such a huge discount was a ‘sure thing’?

I have used JamJar (anyone remember them?) AutoeBid, DriveTheDeal and CarWow over the past 15 years and have never doubted that I wouldn't get what was advertised.

My wife is currently driving around in a 15-plate Titanium X Ford Fiesta that we got last May (£17,800 showroom price) for £14,200.  And we got an email from CarWow a month after delivery giving us a link to a £20 Amazon voucher!!
