Family Car?

I'd like to know how all these youngsters can afford to buy and insure a vRS...

A lot of younger people are working full time jobs as well believe it or not, haha. Insurance for me is only £340 for the year on the vRS.

To be honest, I can only afford it as I live at home.. The quote I got for the 230 was cheaper than the 220 and by the time i put options on the 220, 230 was cheaper. Yes I realise it's a 28k car, but 400 a month isn't that much in my eyes and I'm still saving at least 1000 pounds a month in terms for a house. That still gives me 700 of my own pocket to use upon insurance (which is 938 for the year).

May I be so cheeky as to ask what you do for a living? I've been working a a nurse for 18 years and don't earn that much..... But then you don't become a nurse to get rich!

Certainly, I work as a Software Developer / Engineer

It depends what you mean by a family car? It could mean carrying capacity, comfort toys fitted and so on.

These days they can put so much performance into a "family" car that it outshines many a sports car except maybe in looks.

I'd call it a sports saloon (that's from the days before hatchbacks ! )

When I was single most of my cars were fairly ordinary looking Ford Escorts (Mk. 1 shape) but souped up by Superspeed (of  Ilford ).

So mine was actually the then Lotus Escort but fitted with the Capri GT V6 3 litre engine. Faster to 60 than an E type.

My second one was the Escort RS modified in the same way

So, it depends what you mean by a family car !!!

Not as low as that for me, buy that's due to my postcode.

But yes for what it is the vRS is actually cheap to insure. It's only £200 a year more than my citigo was.

(why are so many Taxis an Octy)

That would be the cheap fleet rates, surely, instead of the space? :)

possibly but many down here are owner/operators so have to buy their own car.

Jesus, where are you young'uns getting your cars insured?! I'm 37 and mine costs way more than the figures quoted above. It actually costs more than my m5 to insure. I queried this and they said it was based purely on risk/claim tables

I did get a diesel, yes haha. That is down to travelling to a from work every week and unfortunately I'm in the military and not the financial industry to afford the running costs!

I take it from that statement you live off barracks? You should be able to claim mileage unless it was your choice to live there after your posting. I used to get over £300 a month in my hand for commuting from Durham to Catterick as I was already living there before posting to a new unit.

Aviva mate. I have 3 years no claims and I done the Aviva drive app and it adds another 28% saving to my quote.

No, I live on base actually! I will only be commuting on weekends, I'm currently 600 miles away from home and I'm moving to HMNB Clyde which means I'll only be 150 miles away from home which was the reason for the diesel - possibly could of got away with a petrol but I'll take my chances.

As far as claiming my milage like you said it's only if you're off base and commute everyday so not much help to me unfortunately.

Both my kids have left home and I'm (and my Mrs) are in our 50's so i could have bought something sensible, but I already owned a Mk1 VRS for 11 years and when I decided to change there was pretty much only one car on the list, a brand new Mk3 VRS 220Tsi.

I would describe it as a sports saloon (have a DTUK tuning box and pedal fitted so a little bit more sportier!).

I bought my first Skoda at 26 which was a 2010 VRS TSi FL hatch and never felt like I owned a family car. Yes, it can be if that's what you want it to be but it can also be a practical, chuckable fun car that gives you the rewards of driving pleasure.

I now have the mark 3 estate and still don't feel like the car is a directed to families, particularly with the 19inch Xtremes, firm suspension etc but I do take my God children out with push chair etc and all is good.

Your mates will envy you once you get it, you can take loads or gear on a holiday, pick up furniture or just have more legroom and load space over a Golf/Focus/Astra etc.

Its a great family car for me, huge boot that fits everything for away trips, 2 kids in the back and it can go. But its not only a family car. The families not always in the car and then its just a great car and me...perfect. :)

I think there are lots of little hot hatches that can handle better, and the ride can be a bit hard and bumpy on crappy UK roads, but very few cars within my budget can compete on the space, practicality (5 door essential!) and fun. Who cares what your colleagues think, enjoy it!

I'm 36... The vRS has just cost me £300 to insure for the year fully comp. this was actually £60 cheaper than the qashqai it's just replaced.... Go figure

I'd seriously suggest the Aviva drive app if you're happy to contend with driving quite sensibly for 200 miles. I got a score of 8/10 and I make a 29% saving, I couldn't add it to my existing policy so I'm going to reap it with the vRS.

I'm 32 and my vrs cost £180 this year with admiral (down from the £400ish renewal from aviva) that's 15k miles, 2 named drivers and 3 accidents between us (only 1 fault claim) and 9 year NCB (protected no claims plus hire car etc)

Nice not to be paying the £1000ish I used to pay but it's a bit depressing to be reminded I'm an old man now.

;)

I've got a more basic estate. When people comment on it being a family car or soccer mom car I tell them to drive along a school entrance at dropoff time and tell me what they see.

SUV's, pickups, some Falcodores (Australia, mate), little four-door auto hatches, and maybe one or two estates. The point being that "family car" people are all driving SUVs and four-door pickup trucks now.

And the Octy is at least not as ugly as most SUVs.
