Can anyone clarify what is meant by 3 years free updates for my Octavia III.

 

My understanding is that updates become avail. approx every 6 months so I would get 6 updates over 3 years for free then have to pay after that. 

 

However I have seen mentioned somewhere on the forum that the free entitlement is 6 downloads and then you pay. That being the case I would probably take only one download per year

so that I could have free updates for 6 years!

 

Can any body advise me on this?

 

Also after free updates , how much do Skoda charge for updates and has anyone ever paid for one and how is it delivered? Is it a visit to Skoda dealer with cash in hand or

can you get it from Skoda Update Portal ?

 

Just planning ahead at this point in case I keep the car after 42 mth PCP.

If your like me and don't know a thing about computers then I wouldn't worry about updates as I won't be doing any as I am not computer savvy lol.

Well, since the updates can be downloaded with a direct link (without entering vin-number) its impossible for Skoda to keep track of how often you update.

So do every update, it should not matter.

I wouldnt be surprised if it was possible to update for free even after 3 years. Time will tell.

As above. Since there is no copyright protection or any other means of verifying you are "eligible" for the maps once they're on the SD I don't think there is anything to worry about.

 

It's a similar situation to the previous generation Columbus sat nav (RNS 510). The maps are freely distributed around the internet and once they're on a disc and inserted to the sat nav it doesn't know any better and will happily download them.

 

So unless they change the way it works somehow to like the previous generation Amundsen where the SD card was encrypted and locked to a specific unit then you're ok and nothing to worry about.

Don't understand this comment.  Over many years of Octavia ownership I have never encountered any problem swapping a genuine SD card between any Amundsen unit. I have never encountered a card "locked" to a specific vehicle. The issue is that you cannot COPY a genuine card - cloned cards simply will not work.

 

To the OP. As others have posted the card is not "tracked" by Skoda so you can update as many times as you like. At present. There has always been a question mark in my mind as to how Skoda would charge for map updates but this has never reared its ugly head.

 

Now the SD card in the Garmin Sat Nav installed in my Mercedes DOES track the VIN of the vehicle using the card and the card cannot be used in any other Mercedes. So they are in a position to charge for any update. The problem is that updates are VERY infrequent so the reliablity of the Sat Nav maps is highly questionable.

I'm not sure if anyone can help me. I've tried to update from the portal without success. I used a normal SD card and not the official Skoda SD card so that may be the problem. It downloaded fine onto the card on my laptop but then isn't recognised when I try to put it in the SD card.

 

I tried using the official Skoda SD card and despite clearing the current information out it wasn't able to download the latest maps as it told there wasn't space.

 

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Has to be the Skoda SD if it's the Amundsen you have. You can't use a generic SD.

Thanks I’ll try again in that case. It did seem to struggle to download it onto the original card last time. Should I try to format it or just delete the previous version?

Format it to FAT32 making sure you change the cluster size to 4K - that makes the small files waste less space on the SD card and should make all the files fit this time.

Ah yes it’s still too large for the original card. I did as you’ve suggested and it sorted itself. Now I’ll know what to do at the new confusing bypass! Thank you all

No need to wait for time   I can tell you my 4 year old, '63 reg car I can still download the new 2018 map from Skoda update portal directly.

The Skoda one I believe 

 

Folk say you need to copy whats on the card before you put the new maps on, if you make a balls up doing it you will still have a copy of the original map saved.

Do i take everything off the Skoda Card, or just a certain part of the file?

Back up everything off the SD card (just in case).

 

Format the SD card.

 

Download and copy the new maps onto the SD card.

 

Using a mac you'll doubtless have problems with a load of spurious files etc. which get loaded onto the SD card in the process (part of Apples copying process), so these will need to be cleaned before the card will work (or use a Windows machine).

Have you unlocked the SD card with the small locking tab on the side?
