amundsen canton sound ........

Featured Replies

Hi forum ,

Already discussed all over this forum , but ............

Can someone shine a light on setting , firmware upgrades or even hardware mods. to get this piece of @#$% sounding better.

I have been installing sound equipment for long time and decided to go for this "high-end" option on my new Octavia estate ( leasing vehicle so no messing around allowed ).

How disappointing .

Settings don't allow for proper adjustment , and all panels do resonate like $%#@@ .

All over very disappointing ,

any suggestions ??

Time!...."...............

Give it time to bed in pal! I thought same as you but now I am converted.....it's definitely improved into a decent upgrade! IMHO!

I doubt if the sound quality will improve ,

is there anything to modify the stock firmware ( to get to the real settings inside the digital processor ).

it tends to be high-heavy , mid-weak and very sub-bass-heavy ( imho ).

By upping the volume the balance gets completely screwed up so you need to do re-adjustments to make it sound bearable.

Right now I am using my iphone with earphones , that at least at low volume sounds much better than the canton .

570 watts ??  pmpo ??

are there any schematics available for this amplifier ??

Hate to break it to you, but to improve it you need to fiddle with the car, and I don't mean the settings in the menu. There is too much stuff that can resonate in the doors and the sub isn't all that great either.

But then again, it's only a € 600,- upgrade, up against (for instance) the € 1800,- Harmann Kardon upgrade in a BMW.

The sound quality will improve!

But the "sub" will always be crap.

The good thing is that the amp has power enough to drive a couple of 8" or 10".

I am testing 2 x Peerless 830500 (12") in closed box in my car now and are very pleased with the result.

Note that I'm near 50 years old, so I dont listen to the same type of music as my kids.

But I like to play it loud.

i found info on how to lower tweeter-level by damping them a couple of db ,

but the sound is simply terrible , you can hear the firmware changing levels when you push the volume up .

bass goes down , mid do strange things ,  and highs go up but there is no way to control this .

maybe i am too used to Phoenix Gold and realtime analysis of the cars acoustics ;-)

dealer does not know anything about this  ( well they say ) .

There must be firmware available for this canton system ................anyone ??

I dont understand those who says the sound of Canton is terrible. Even though it isnt perfect, but its good sound quality for the low cost IMO.

For me there is only three "problems":

1. Lack of Soundproofing

2. A way to small subwoofer that is driven to hard.

3. Use of 8 ohms speakers that is a little strange in car audio.

Many that has tried to upgrade finds out that the most bus system is another problem, because there is no analog inputs to the amplifier.

This is the new standard in most new cars, and hopefully there will be many aftermarked suppliers with most system soon.

Here is one example that may be of interest:

Edit: Maybe there is a (big) difference between hatch / estate or Amundsen / Columbus when it comes to sound quality?

I do know that the firmware has been updated twice since 2013. The sound is better in my 2016 hatch than it was in a 2013 estate.

Boll####!

Canton is Sh*te

The standard system is even worse

I've had them both

Why would an audiophile buy a budget car like a Skoda with an integrated audio system.

Surely if it so important you'd get a car you can fit a custom system in?

2. A way to small subwoofer that is driven to hard.

3. Use of 8 ohms speakers that is a little strange in car audio.

Many moons ago I ran 3 8ohm Crystal Comp 8s in a Seat Leon just to see what it could do (and I had a 1 ohm stable 1kw mono) and I struggled to get it sounding punchy.

Opinions are free to be aired on this forum, so I believe....

However...having 22 years experience as a sound engineer I know what sounds good. The best I've had is the meridian system in Jaguar XJ...absolutely brilliant system by far.

And my mortgage and recent addition of two children turns me to Skoda....as well as probably the best value for money in the current market. Again, just my opinion of course.

Anybody that refers to themselves as an audiophile needs to be beaten to death with some cryogenically frozen, gold plated hdmi cables.

Can we start a topic for the best comments on the O3 forum??

I'd vote for this one! Chuckling away here.

Anyway, keeping it on topic...Canton is well worth the money, it just takes getting the setup right, time to bed in and making sure it's fed a good quality audio source. I find it is best using Spotify. Yes the bass isn't chav loud, but it's a nicely balanced system, and agree it's let down by the lack of decent sound deadening by Skoda cutting corners to keep costs down. Mine was standard anyway, but still rate it and as I've mentioned before it's better than the Bose system in my mates '08 A3.

There are often things that annoy you sondwise, so for example does the standard system. Tweeters and all.

For extra money you will have Canton that is far less annoying, it is easily listenable. IMHO that extra pays off.

Why that much wining after all? Canton is not a high-end system. Skoda is not a luxury car.

Canton is actually a very high end system - just not in a Skoda haha. It's just the name, and it will have been made to a cost.

That's slightly comforting seeing as my VRS with canton is winging its way to me as I type....

The standard is really good. If you sit on your drive with the engine off, it's pretty balanced.

As soon as you start the engine and drive it all goes to pot, and the reason for that is the lack of deadening and proofing. It's always a constant battle in a car. It's the worst place ever to listen to music.

Canton WOULD be usable IF you COULD programm it decently.

i get tears in my eyes if i see this low budget piece of crap.

try adjusting the center speaker -->cannot do

try adjusting the tweeters --> curves are wrong

try to get rid of rattles and noise --> can not do

try to get that silly woofer to woof decently --> not possible

i was happy with Phoenix gold ( sweet 3k power memories )

It's a system that costs £500. For what it costs it's a significant improvement over stock and it is possible to tweak it so it sounds half decent. Rattles is more a car issue than a Canton specific issue.

Set the sound focus to Driver, turn off canton surround and tweak the EQ. I definitely feel my sub at +7 volume setting. It's not perfect but it's good enough to stop me from ripping it all apart and putting custom kit in. And this is coming from someone with £300 earphones and a keen ear for detail.

Does anyone know if for MIB1 head units there are differences between Amundsen and Columbus in respect of available adjustments for main equaliser and Canton settings. On my MIB1 Amundsen with Canton adjustments are pretty limited to say the least
