Issues refitting inner door panel...

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Been a long time since I posted on here.

I need some advice, however, so here I am again!

I have a 07 Octavia vRS.

Shortly after buying it, around 6 years ago the missus put one of the rear windows down with one of those child's blinds still suckered on to it.

The blind came off, but the suckers went down into the window, and the electric window stopped working. You could hear the motor going but nothing would happen.

We have just lived with it, and never tinkered with the controls.

It's always been on my list to sort out, and have always bottled out after getting the outer door panel off, when presented by the inner one, since cannot see an obvious way to remove it.

Anyway, on the way home from camping at the weekend my 3 year old daughter decided to play with the controls, and the window went down (yeah, it wasn't disabled at the front and should have been).

We were on the motorway so I put the window back up, at which point the window obviously fell off whatever it was sat on and dropped into the door! WHOOPS!

So, we drove home with the window wide open, and I then spent a couple of hours trying to get it back out!

This caused me to bite the bullet and get the inner door off, by popping out these metal rivet things, that got badly bent in the process (picture attached).

Why on earth these things are used?! If I was cynical I'd suggest that VW do it so you have to take it to a garage to get anything done...

Anyway, I got the panel off, pulled the window up, put it back on the plastic thing it sits on, and managed to hammer a couple of the rivet things back in.

Applied some gaffer tape, and job done, messy, but done... or so I thought.

When my missus drove the next day the window dropped by an inch from the top, and now goes up and down, but will not go up to the top.

I also don't think the window is attached to the plastic guide thing it sits in, since can pull it up by hand.

So, to my questions:

  1. What are the rivet things called, and can I buy new ones? If so where?
  2. How are they removed (I used two flat-head screwdrivers, and scratched up quite a bit of the panel) and fitted (hammer?)?
  3. I assume they meant to be perishable, like the plastic "tear" grommets I had to get for the outer door panel?
  4. When I took the inner door off I could only get a slight gap due to all the wiring. What is the process for getting it off further so can better see what is going on?
I think the wiring I have issue with it likely the central locking bit at the back of the door.
  5. How should the window be attached to the mechanism?
I see there is a hole at the bottom of the window, and can get access to this by pulling out a grommet on the inner door panel. Not much room in which to work though.

Any other tips?

Sorry, load of questions here, but really feel I'm close with this one, and could really do with avoiding an hour or twos labour at the garage to sort it out!

Cheers,

Westy

PS: I should have taken more photos. Will aim to later in the week, when I have time to have another go at it.

They are pop rivets, you are supposed to drill them out.

The same thing happened to me two days ago with the blind not impressed

Yeah, found out they are rivets. 6.4mm, part number 910-788-01, and Skoda charged me £6 for 10!

They are attached using a rivet gun, and detached by drilling out.

I have had to order a rivet gun, since these are larger than normal rivets!

Still need to solve getting past the wiring, and attaching the window. Apparently they are often clipped in, and is not the best design in the world.

Will have a go at the weekend perhaps.

The window should be on a two part peg.

That peg will be visable through the hole. You need to knock the centre out and then the outer. The window will then seperate from the regulator. Remember to fish both parts out when you have it off. Refit into the glass before you refit the panel.
