Headlight adjustment for Driving abroad

Featured Replies

A long shot, I seem to remember reading somewhere that you can adjust the headlights via the infotainment thingy so they are adjusted for driving on the other side of the road. Am I making this up or is it possible.

Thanks

Chris

And you can set it up manually without satnav:

Press the CAR button, then tap on the function surface → Light.

Travel mode:

- Light setting for the right/left-hand traffic

■ R-hand traffic - For right-hand traffic

■ L-hand traffic - For left-hand traffic

... or in my case as my Satnav seems to think I am in Germany, it is putting my lights in tourist mode in the UK!!!

Thank you chaps, will be driving circa 850 to France next friday, cannot wait! The estate seems to drive better with some weight over the rear wheels, less tyre roar and a better ride.

Agreed - it is designed to be a load carrier

Sorry for bringing up an old thread but I've been searching to find out about headlight adjustment for going abroad. I know the LED's are straightforward throught the menus but what do you do (if anything) for the latest facelift halogen Octavia models  - I'm considering an SE.

  • With my current Superb II facelift it is a lever inside the headlight unit (hard to see - but easypeasy when you know how)
  • I know the current Golf halogen headlights have a flat/narrow beam that doesn't need converting
  • I never want to go back to stickers

I know you don’t want to go back to stickers, but what’s the issue ?

Ive just got back from a trip to France, Italy and Switzerland, used Eurolite beam deflectors and had no problems. I could still where I was going, and nobody flashed me, so I wasn’t dazzling other drivers.

Peel them off and bin them when you get back home.

On my old 2001 mk I Octavia (that my son has now) I used stickers for years and after many trips the plastic looks sort of "stained and cracked" where the stickers used to be. It doesn't fail an MOT but it has been mentioned.

I've managed to flick a lever on my Superb I and Superb II , using stickers seems a backward step somehow

It does seem a backwards step if older cars had the lever to switch them, I agree. Cost saving I guess...

I have peeled them straight off with headlights on so they were hot, then used polish on the headlight to clean it, doesn’t look like there’s any marks.

Might have to push the boat out a bit for the SE L that has LED lights! Trying to downsize from the Superb and finding a car that mrs bigjohn likes driving. A Golf was under consideration but after a recent trip clearly the vast boot size is a requirement!

Stickers are the only sensible option with Halogen headlights on the Octavia III, AFAIK the only other option is to fit LHD headlights every time you go to Europe (and refit RHD headlights when you return).

The LED lights are amazing - I don't think I could go back to Xenons or Halogen now - if you do a lot of driving in the dark/winter it would be worth the investment.

I've got a 2019 VRS. What type of lights do I have?

Should be LED (well UK Spec is).

Have a new SE L on order for Oct delivery which I see from the specs will have LED headlights...is there a way of changing the dipping when travelling abroad ?

I'd reasearched the LED version and from the current manual:-

"Driving abroad When driving in countries with opposing traffic system (traffic on the left/right), headlights may dazzle oncoming traffic. Therefore, the LEDFront headlight setting must be adapted by turning on travel mode in infotainment in the  /  →  → Light menu. In this mode, there is no automatic adjustment of the light beam in front of the vehicle."

Well yes... and NO!

On my 18 plate Octy estate the setting is there, but it does nothing!

It also does not update the clock even when 'Set time by GPS' is selected.

We go to France about 4 times a year doing roughly 1500 miles each trip, I rarely drive at night so had no reason to question whether the beam pattern gets changed.

Until this last trip, I was flashed by lots of drivers, so I investigated.

My dealer always fails to find any fault when one is reported, so now I video everything..

Here is the one for the headlights...

headlight - no change

I appreciate btw that driving on 'main beam' will dazzle oncoming traffic no matter what, my commentary would give the impression that that is what I am moaning about, which is not the case.

I am waiting to hear what they suggest they are going to do about it.

They tried a 'system update' to fix the clock - which did not work!

I have the kangaroo enhancement on the accelerator, now this.

In all this is the worst Octavia I have ever owned!

That's not good. There was a noticeable change in pattern with the Pre-facelift AFS11 Xenons.

I never managed to see exactly when they changed but every time I got off the Channel tunnel they had changed automatically.

A shame that for Xenons they were not great on dip beam.

Absolutely...

Cannot understand why the LED's cant change automatically.

The Sat nav is quick enough to tell me the speed limits when we come off the ferry (either end).

I loved the Xenons, especially the cornering bit, great for the country lanes round where I live.

Car is in with the dealer for a WHOLE WEEK,  from the 13th - apparently they are going to 'dial in' to it, in an attempt to fix the clock - oh and maybe the lights..

Hmm - I remain un impressed.

Oh dear - might need a re-think. Nervous to change my Superb II then as it's been fab - eventually will need to downsize though!

Off to France in a week so time to click the headlight levers - a swine to get at with my fingers but with an Aldi inspection camera and a small screwdriver only takes 30 seconds a side

It may be the worst Octy I have owned, but it’s not a bad car overall.

its a joy to drive long distances and you can still pack an inordinate amount of stuff in the back.

The 1.4tsi 150 engine would be ok coupled to a DSG, but as a manual it’s a pig to get a smooth pull away in slow moving traffic.

SUK tell me they (along with the rest of VAG) are working on a fix. Time will tell!

I've not owned a Mk2 Superb but have driven a couple and have owned three Passats of the same vintage. I've also owned three Octavia's including a Mk3.

You will notice a big drop in refinement especially at speed, the Mk3 Octavia lets much more road and wind noise in.

The ride is harsher and can feel crashy especially if you get a torsion beam model which also transmits suspension thump noise into the cabin.

The Mk3 feels light which aids handling and economy but it just doesn't give that feel of solidity like you get in a Passat or Superb. For me on my 20k mile mainly motorway commute it was to big a step down and coupled with reliability issues I only kept it a year. So a long test drive for you is a must and go on a high speed ride.

My Wife still has her Mk2 Octavia, we've had that 7 years. it's no Superb/Passat but it doesn't suffer from the issues the MQB Mk3 has.

Don't malign the superb 1.4tsi 150 engine, it's the successor 1.5 that has the problems .😎

Quite so, my error!
