Go for it Andy.

If I were to go for a private plate I think I'd always go for something to do with me rather than the car so as to be able to keep it as my own with each car which is what I did 13 years ago..... That way it's a bit of an investment as well. Mine was bought for £500 all in from the DVLA in 2003 and is currently worth approx. £1700-1800. ;)

If you are set on a car specific one though the second one is better IMHO.

Not a fan of private plates,. Can't really say why but I find them a little faux money. The only ones that work for me are those stupidly expensive 2 or 3 digit ones. Plus the hassle of moving plates when swapping cars....

Not exactly a hassle.... Fill in a five minute form and post it with logbook..... a week or so later 2 minute job to swap plates on car when ready. (Mine's been on four cars now)

Exactly. The £105 each time irks a bit though.

That is to put it on retention rather than swapping to another vehicle.... To swap it is £80 which I have done once. the other two times I put it on retention.... So £290 over 13 years..... And as I say I'm already something like £1300 in profit with the plate value so I'm still in profit after removing these costs. :)

Plus my plate stands out more now as it's obviously a lot older than the car could be etc.....

Nouveaux riche perhaps 20 years ago, now everybody has them and some of the most exclusive plates aren't always on mega-money but rather modest Fiestas and Yaris. If you can get car type and initials that works, especially if you continue to buy the type, although A8 on an Audi A3 or M5 on a 120D BMW makes you realize that downsizing seems inevitable...

The 'S6' type plates on 2.0 tdi A4's make me smile.

As has been said above - a personal to me plate is more appealing than a car specific.

I'd like '**01 JRJ" but I suspect it is quite expensive.

JRJG

It's only about 90 now to take plate off and can be done instantly online in most cases, no more posting to local office

As I said above it's £80 to swap direct between vehicles or £105 per year to put it on retention. ;)

you'll have an unsuccessful search for an '01' reg.... They were never used and the current scheme will end in 2050/51 with '50' & '00' reg's

Are you sure Dave? See here.

0007 VRS is available  :) as is A007 VRS

And retention lasts ten years now no need to keep paying :)

Yep I stand corrected. :)

Yio, totally tacky - the motoring equivalent of holidaying in Benidorm.

Plates that feature the likes of 'JAG' or 'VRS' are possibly the worst - a car enthusiast will know it's a Jaguar or vRS - the non-enthusiast won't notice or care.

Of course 01 was X/Y wasn't it? Showing my youth there... ;)

Okay then I'll try again: **03 JRJ

Yep. So much easier doing it online now.

Swapping my wife's Alfa Spider for a new A3 cabriolet this morning - put the Alfa plate on retention online on Tuesday this week, paid the £80, new V5 for the Alfa and the retention certificate for the plate arrived yesterday.

When I got my VRS earlier this year, I was unable to do it online. What a ball ache that was...

But private plates go sooo well with the wind deflectors yo! :)

And what is it with every Aston Martin having a personal plate starting "007"

Really. I mean, clearly, the fat balding old man driving is obviously NOT James Bond!

The only private plate I'd bother with is PO57 PAT on a red Roomster :)

He is a fictional character I'm afraid, so he doesn't exist anyway........of course Santa Claus does exist, but doesn't drive an Aston Martin, he drives a 'Hyundai Santa Sleigh' if memory serves correct :D
