This is my first 'Help me' type post...

 

I have a 5 door 06 Skoda Fabia Ambiente (1.2 litre). The problem is that it's started making a 'scraping' / 'grinding' type sound when turning, more so when turning right. Kind of sounds a bit like a steam train chugging "chaa - chaa - chaa - chaa - chaa..." etc, as I turn. As soon as I straighten up the sound goes away. It also makes a similar sound but much quieter/subtle when braking too!

 

If anyone on here can guide me as to the best course of action then that would be much appreciated. Anything I can check before advancing to garage repairs etc.

Plus should I stop driving it until this issue is resolved? Thanks 

Sounds like the disc guard may have a stone in it or got bent slightly.

mine does this when its wet around roundabouts from the rear - think it might be something to do with the wheel bearings or drums rubbing due to build up of rust

I had intermittent rubbing of the rear drums on mine due to rust build-up on the flange which sits close to the backplate. It's been fine since I cleaned them up. So check discs and drums.

CV joints usually knock/click rather than scrape/grind.

I'd think backplate rubbing, or maybe the arch liner is loose?

Thanks to everyone who's replied to my query so far - much appreciated! Quite a few things for me to look in to.... 

Brake pad catching on the disc? Wheel bearing is also possible especially if it's been replaced by a half wit.
