Pikey mods - are they really worth doing??

Featured Replies

The TT vent arch and the remove front plastic thing from the fog light area.

Does it really make any difference in summer?? Placebo effect??

The TT arch liner IMO is a worth while mod. It takes a few hours to do it properly.

I am not sure if it makes that much difference, but if you have already done a few engine mods like a panel filter, cupra intake and a remap, any extra cooling can only be a good thing.

You will notice that most cars with SMIC do have this mod as a factory option (even lorries), so it must do something!

As for Pikey mod no2, well no testing has been done with the fog light cut out but some logging has been done with the fog light cover removed completely and it reduced temps by 5 degrees C I think IIRC.

If it really does much with just a section of the fog light cover cut out is debateable but I personally think it's a worthwhile mod considering it costs nothing and can only help, even if not by much.

On a very hot day it will help abit, I fitted after I had a RR day because they said it was dropping boost, next RR I went to the power and torque had improved (two different RR's though).

Like hellfire said I think someone has done some VAGCOM logging with this mod

How easy are these to fit / remove?

How much is the TT arch liner?

Do you remove the trim from both fog lights as it might look silly?

Thanks Hellfire

There has been a debate about Pikey mod and the potential for a stone to hit the Intercooler if you do Pikey mod 2. I have done 15k miles however and can report that mine is still intact and just as clean as it was before.

What I did was take my front right wheel off, got a stanley knife, and cut the liner, a huge hole, then with some fine steel mesh from b+q, i glued the mesh over the hole. I've never had heat soak since.

Prior to this pikey mod, i got heat soak all the time.

It obviously does make a difference or Audi wouldn't do it with the TT or the S4.

The S4 arch liner mod was very popular on the A4 1.8T.

I reckon personally that they would make a difference.

i found mine to run smoothers and il pulled better after doin both mods

The Ibiza PD130 which is pretty much the same car as the Fabia vRS has the vent as standard.

Anyone know if this might be a direct swap wheel arch liner as I'm not sure I like the Stanley knife effect....

I did a lot of checking and the Ibiza PD130's arch liner doesn't fit. You might aswell get the TT one as it's bigger, or the S4 one which is even bigger still :)

You don't necessarily need the vent. Some, as mentiond by Shifty, have cut a hole and covered with mesh. I drilled lots of holes and covered with mesh, so there is more than one way it can be done

Any pics of the mesh grill mod anyone?

Is it possible to install a Cold Air Feed to the Intercooler from somehere up front via a section of flexible house, therefore you wouldn't need a vent in the liner, or maybe just a small hole say 3" ID, which the pipe would fit into.... thus when driving along air would get shoved int the pipe and forced round onto the IC.

Just a thought, as I've not investigated it yet (don't get car for a week or two)!

:)

Is it really worth cutting/drilling parts of the car, taking things off, adding things etc with only a POSSIBILITY of gaining negligible performance????

I'm not being funny, i really am asking.....seems pointless to moi:confused:

"Its not the destination, but the journery..." to quote someone else, at somepoint in the past!

Half the fun in in modding / trying, and then feeling good when you do get a result!

See below.

Just drill lots of small holes; REAL PIKEY MODDNG

Makes you wonder why Skoda did not do this as standard.

Cold air feed could be done in the pikey spirit with some Hoover hose would work fine as long as it wasnt near exhaust or Turbo. intercooler isnt that far from front anyway the liner mod doesnt let air in it lets it out.

I was thinking that the rotation of the wheels would / could fire a stone in thru a gap and damage the IC............... also, is the concern then that the area where the IC is loacted gets to hot and so you want to move this warm air away as opposed to feeding cold air onto the IC to keep it cool?

I guess both would better tahn just one.

holes are very small and wheel rotation would fire stone backwarks unless you reverse alot.

Youre right the vents let hot air out rather than cold air in they give it a quicker route out,
