New to Briskoda... Looking for Octavia tips!

Featured Replies

Hi guys! This is my first post so if it's the wrong place then please feel free to move it or correct me :D

So basically I have ordered an Octavia SE Sport 1.4 TSI and I'm collecting it Monday. This is my first Skoda, first turbo charged car AND first brand new car! So thought I'd see if you guys had any advice and/or tips for me :)

I'm already aware of "running in" processes on new cars and done a bit of research on turbos (so I now know about not lugging the turbo lol). What else do you lovely people have for me?

Honestly, don't nanny the car. There is no need to "run it in". Just drive it normally from day 1 (without flogging it to death if that's your style of driving).

Otherwise welcome to the O3 club (and thank your lucky stars it's a pre-FL car haha).

Welcome to the forum.

Please read the Owners Manual.

Set your tyre pressures and the TPMS then you will have some idea how the car was PDI'd.

Run in your new 'Green Tyres', the Brakes and the suspension and the drive train while getting used to the car and listening.

The advice on the engine is in the Owners Manual and ignore if you want, but be aware of new brakes / tyres and they are not fully efficient until they have some use and maturing.

have fun with the new car,

drive safe, see that the tyres are not over inflated, check you can get the wheels off if you need too, ie check the wheel bolts.

This !!!! (above)

Take it easy till you get a few hundred miles on the clock, not for the engine but for the brakes and tyres - but ensure the oil is up to temp before using many revs.

Search the forum and read the 'Pinneds' as a general intro to the forum. All the info you ever need is one here somewhere and people will normally not want to repeat it in this thread.

It appears the response I wrote this morning didn't send, so here we go again!

Welcome :)

I'm in a similar situation, just waiting for my new Octavia to roll off the boat and reach me, however I'm already a Skoda Fabia owner, so not so new.

Was your order based on stock already in the dealership? I placed my order on the 10th and it's not likely to reach me for another couple of weeks (boo.)

As others have suggested, read the manual - I have spent ages going over it to learn interesting things about the car.

Get some pictures up once you collect it :)

Once again, welcome and enjoy your new toy!

Don't read the manual! it's a new toy, drive it around for a bit then sit on your drive way and push every single button. Way more fun :)

I love those that press every button, and then go to Menu and press Factory Reset.

Before you get your new car speak to your Salesperson.

Go through what your car has that you paid for and the Factory or the PDI do not activate.

If you want one touch  / press unlock / Lock then have that.  If you want Anti Hi-Jack locking have that, if it is Driver Choice on the Menu then fine.

If the Dealership need to set it, then have them do that, do not go paying later.

Then there is Fixed or Variable Servicing, they will likely put it to Fixed, Do you want that?

It is nice to talk, so ask, then tell them what you want.

http://volkswagen.co.uk/owners/servicing/regimes

Even tell the Salesperson to hand over to the Technician / Fitter doing the PDI the tyre pressures you want on collecting the car.

If you want to run on Super Unleaded tell them you will pay the extra £1 or what ever to get that in when they are putting in 10 litres of 95 ron Unleaded.

When you collect the car and if the engine is cold, look where the coolant level is, and check the Oil Level on collecting the car.

Then when you get home do a 'Hot Check' / Operating Temperature then you know both levels as the car has with a Full Capacity of Oil.

Then as the Owners Manual advises you 'May need more oil during the first 5,000 km.)  so that means do not rely on Warning Lights.

Then Chill, have fun, press all the buttons.....

But what if he presses the ejector seat button by mistake?

Shhhhh ;)

Hahah thanks guys! Didn't expect that many replies this morning.

gRoberts: Yeah I ordered one that was already in stock (Was at the port in the UK and ordered it to be sent to dealership on 17th Nov) so hasnt taken too long.

Few things I wouldn't have thought of so thanks guys! I will post photos once I get it, will be such a nice change from my Citroen Xsara Picasso lmao

Ensure that the plastic transport blocks are removed from the front suspension. Too many dealers forget to remove them and the ride will be very harsh. Unfortunately you have to jack up the car to allow the front suspension to drop enough to check for the blocks. I would get the dealer to affirm that they have been removed.

Don't worry about the rear suspension block as there aren't any, welcome to rear torture suspension club Skoda has created, a 30year technological back pedal.

Dont listen to those that knows better than the manufactures engineers :-)

There are a reason why Skoda says you should give the engine a running in.

Maybe there is a connection between those that did not, and those that are complaining about oil consumption?

There seems not to be, because it is not always ex demonstrators or hire or lease cars, just fundamental design and manufacturing, component choice and quality control issues really, so a lottery.

I have never had a car with a turbo either; has given me some "oh shi----" moments but its great.

Be aware of what rev range your turbo kicks in at, it is not fun when you know there is a speed camera coming up so you slow and drop gear only for the rev range to be just about where the turbo kicks in  :p

Mine was my first new car and Skoda back in March and I've been very pleased with it. Like others have said just drive it normally without flogging/labouring it, check the fluid levels and tyre pressures but above all just enjoy!

I ordered mine on the 20th - it was at Factory exit then so should be here in a couple of weeks, depending on the currents in the North Sea I guess... Oh well, the longer the vRS takes the more the rental Mokka gets punished!

On speaking to the dealer re running in, he's told us to drive it how we want it to be driven. At times, I drive hard - and I want the car to work for me in that respect. So on his advice I will be showing the car how to behave from the off.

Thanks again everyone! It's been a long week waiting so Monday morning can't come soon enough. I'm like a kid at Christmas :D

Mines currently at the Tyne dock, which is about 5 miles from me. Annoyingly there is a outlet shopping center right next door and my wife made me walk around it knowing I could peer over the fence and potentially find my car.

Should be collecting mine next weekend :)

Post pictures!!

Ouch that's harsh haha. Not to bad then! Yeah I'll post photos this evening, just trying to sleep but to damn excited haha

Where exactly are these blocks fitted..? Had mine little over a week and find it very harsh on the front.

Cheers

The blocks are inside the front suspension units and significantly reduce the suspension travel for transport from the factory. They are brightly coloured plastic blocks clipped to the damper tube. There may be 2 or 3 per side. Unfortunately you cannot see them just by looking in the wheel arch as there is a plastic cover on the damper. You have to jack up the front of the car to allow the suspension to fully extend. If the blocks are there it will be obvious and you just wrestle the them out, no tools required. My car was 2 years old when I got it and still had them in, how the previous owner didn't complain about the ride I will never know. I complained to the dealer that did the original PDI and they were very ashamed and apologetic. When i removed the blocks the ride was transformed.

Absolutely loving it so far! Surprisingly the salesman told me I don't need to run it in and in the manual it just says not to exceed 3/4 of the maximum revs for 1km...
