Mobius Action Cam, does yours start recording when cold?

Featured Replies

Worked fine until the recent bout of cold weather, when it decided not to start up on ignition. I  had been using the 'Super Capacitor' all summer so thought that it may be failing, so I replaced it with the 820mAh battery that came with the camera. Still  did not start recording on ignition.

At various stages of a journey I unplugged and re-connected, it was not until around the 10 min mark after driving off, I plugged in the power lead again and off it went recording again. Okay, I thought duff battery as it had been sitting idle for around 9 months. Put in a new Super Cap', didn't make any difference.

A post on the Mobius ActionCam: https://dashcamtalk.com/forum/threads/cold-weather-not-recording.22280/

Explains that below certain temps some components may not function.

I have my Mobius 3M H/D Velcro's to the screen with the lens on an extension lead mounted below the HBA housing, Too much of a hassle to remove it every cold night though. Might look a bit basic but until I can sort the startup problem, it will stay as it is!

Anyone else with the problem or found out what the remedy is?

Mine has been fine, though the lowest I've seen is about -3c. Mine has the battery.

Mine has been fine for many years (it us one of the first 'A' lens ones) however my car normally lives in my garage so does not feel the coldest of nights.

Is it failing to start or failing to record? Could it be the camera is having a hard time reading the memory card?

Mine's worked fine for the last few winters and we see temps from -20 to -35°C.

Thanks for the replies, when temps are around freezing or just above the camera  refuses to start up, the green charge LED comes on and goes out after around 30 seconds, the rear red LED battery indicator does not come on at all. Its been in the car overnight and current temp is 0 deg C and again refuses to startup. Even tried the reboot then reconnect but that didn't do any good.

At a loss with this one, if susi's works down to -35 looks like mine is the summer version!

I have bought and tried another SuperCap' that made no difference, tried two SD cards, two power supplies, checked the 820mAh battery was fully charged and nothing made any difference. This has been bugging me for over a month, but further internet searches brought this little gem from a suppliers website:
Quote: ...........The battery is too cold to provide the power needed to record video. Keep the battery warm before using the camera in cold temperatures (around freezing and below). Unquote.

This I find odd as other dash-cams use the same type of battery - Li-Po, but rate their cameras as -20~70deg C

If I want to continue using the Mobius looks like I will have to remove it when it gets cold, which is a bit of a pain as its nicely hidden using a lens extension lead. Maybe time to buy a dedicated dash-cam but I do like the Mobius.

My Mobius has started to do the same.

Although if I turn it on manually (press and hold the button furthest away from the lens) then 9 times out of 10 it will fire up.

I haven't updated it for a while, in fact I haven't touched it in over a year other than to turn it on manually recently in the cold mornings!

I had a similar issue at one point (actually during the summer). Spent hours scanning the internet for a solution. Then I checked the battery pack and it was slightly mishapen. I ordered one of these from ebay and it fixed the problem:

"Upgraded Replacement Li-Po Battery for Mobius Action Sport Camera 3.7V 820mAh"

Good luck with your Mobius - they are a great camera when they work.

Hi Susi.

Tried new batteries - 820mAh and SuperCaps with no improvement, general opinion is that its a 'component' problem, and it has now developed more problems and will not connect to mSetup on the PC or to my camera which it did to both previously. Seems that they are great - when they work - that is!

Am looking at the Vioflo A119S as a replacement. Looks like silver 1011 is having the same problem, V1's were prone to cold failures but as a rule V2&3 do not. Mine is V3 so there's the exception to the rule.

My Mobius isn't turning on until the last 15 minutes of my 80 minute commute so I've just ordered a super capacitor to replace the original (presumably) dead battery.

Fingers crossed this fixes things.

Does anyone have the ideal settings that should be selected for the Mobius for optimal use as a dash cam with a live feed?

I've heard some settings aren't particularly favourable for battery / super capacitor life such as the delayed off mode etc.

I use the standard battery in mine and the only way to get the camera to record right from the start of every journey is to use the delay switch off by 10 secs.

It something to do with the ignition on, then starting the car up causes a drop in voltage which leads to it not recording correctly.

This may be something you should look at adjusting as it worked for me

Thanks, do you mean the delayed switch-on?

That was indeed an issue a few years ago when I first installed the Mobius. adjusting the 'Power On Delay' from 'Fast' to 'Delay' did help alot.

In the last few months it has taken almost an hour to turn on, which suggested to me it might be battery related.

I also read that it's best to activate the 'Power-off Disconnect' to 'Immediate' instead of the previous '30 Seconds' on installations that are hard wired to the car.

I've literally just fitted my new super capacitor now so will try it on the way to work tomorrow.

Just thought I'd check if there is anything else I need to switch to ensure optimum performance.

No the one I needed to adjust was the power off disconnect as that was causing the problem

The camera would be powered on but not start recording for ages before I changed it from immediate to 10 secs

I thought the 'Power-off Disconnect' allowed you to choose how long the camera would record after the power (ignition) was turned off?

This is why I was curious as to understand why this might affect the ability of the camera to turn on rather than off.

I fitted a super cap 5 week sago when my battery died.

These are my settings when using the battery and now the super cap. I use a 64GB Kingston card.

Well, my replacement super capacitor hasn't solved the problem.

I'll try clarendon462's suggestion and change the 'Power-off' setting from 'immediate' to 10 seconds.

Not sure how this affects the start-up the next morning but I've run out of options to fix it now...
