I Hate Ice!!!! ****** Off!!!!!!!

Featured Replies

MY DRIVE IS ON A 45% INCLINE. PARKED THE CAR AT AROUND 12.30AM AT THE TOP OF THE DRIVE, PUT THE HANDBRAKE ON AND GOT OUT.

GOT IN THE HOUSE AND BEGAN WATCHING T.V. FOR 15 MINS BEFORE GOING TO BED.

AND SUDDENLY

CRASH !!

BANG !!

WALLOP !!

MY PI$$ING CAR HAD ROLLED BACKWARDS OUT OF MY DRIVE, SMASHING MY GATE, ACROSS TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STREET BEFORE FINALLY ENDING UP IN THE SIDE OF AN N REG POLO.

SUPRISE TO SAY I WASN'T A HAPPY BUNNY, I IMMEDIATELY RAN OUT AND EXPLAINED WHAT HAD HAPPENED TO THE OTHER PARTY WHO WHERE VERY UNDERSTANDING.

I EXPLAINED THAT THE CAR HAD OBVIOUSLY JUST SLID BACKWARDS ON THE ICE ON MY DRIVE.

ANYWAY, THE NET RESULT IS BOTH REAR ARCHES SCRAPED AS THE RUBBED THE WALL ON THE WAY OUT OF MY DRIVE. THE REAR LOWER BUMPER HAS A LARGE SCRATCH ON IT AND A BIT OF THE OTHER DRIVERS CAR.

THE BOOT HAS A LARGE DINT IN IT ABOUT THE SIZE OF 2 50P COINS WHERE IT HAS SMASHED THROUGH MY METAL GATE.

TOTAL ESTIMATE TO REPAIR MY CAR IS LUCKILY ONLY

please turn off the caps key.

Only ICE and women can make a man that mad.

I had an XKR fall off my drive once its not a pleasent experience.

That's bad luck :(

Just out of interest, do you leave the car in gear too?

Whoops.

Im guessing leaving it in gear could have helped a little. Seems a bit odd that it didnt roll straight away as there must have been ice under the tyres for it to start to slide.

Maybe as the rear brakes cooled a touch it allowed the handbrake to come off just enough to start momentum.

Back luck mate.

I have had my car slide a bit on a snowy drive, so whenever i pull up onto it now when it's icy, snowy or frosty, I always bounce up and down on my seat to see if it'll start to slide. Sometimes it does, in which case I take it up the road to park it.

I am with Ross though, wonder whether the rear discs might have cooled and slipped?

I always keep mine in gear when I park it.

Oh, and massive bad luck.

Sorry to hear about your problems... It sucks!

Bad luck

I always leave mine in gear now too after it went for a drive on it's own - Bloody rear disc brakes are useless - roll on the re-introduction of drum brakes!!!

Sorry to hear what happened, you must be mighty p'eed off and its understandable, I know I would be.

Unlucky. :thumbdwn: Suppose it could have ben worse, it could have hit someone passing by !!!

Yeah the key is that me & Emma are safe, as much as I like my vRS it's just a car and can always be replaced. Just glad were both ok & no passers by where injured either.

Good Advice

You mean someone else has got a drive like mine  (see pic below) although it does level out a bit at the top

It's bad luck ...but after a couple of near goes I always leave the car in gear and as I get out I lean on the b pillar to see if it moves ...also have a grit bin near us so some of that gots put down if it's slippy as well

I had to look at this thread, who could possible be against In Car Entertainment ?

Bad luck mate.

RBW.

Gutted, feel bad for you. I have a slopy drive too so will pop it in gear tonight..

I had a pupil did this with her car, luckily it went right accross the road and into someone elses drive!! lucky for her, their car wasn't parked there at the time!

bad luck dude.....

not good news :( I'd be beside myself if I saw my car sliding down a drive, through a gate and across the road! luckily I dont have a drive, mine is in the garage so doesn't freeze up!

The only accident of any note I've had in 30-odd years of driving happened years ago when I lived in Shetland. I was driving to the airport to catch an early (7.20 am) flight. It was a very cold morning and the roads were covered in black ice - the gritters hadn't been out. It was a 26 mile drive  and although my car (a 323i BMW) had studded winter tyres all round it was very hairy trip :(

I got 25 miles safely. But then I reached the top of a hill. There was a car in front of me who had been off the road twice already  so I was keeping a safe distance. I went over the top of the hill at about 10mph to see the car in front broadside across the road at the bottom of the hill. I braked to a halt - then the Beemer started to slide down the hill all wheels locked

Inevitable result - crunch

Then I got out of the car and ended up on my **** :o :O The road was like glass :thumbdwn: :thumbdwn:

You've got the Caravan attached to the wrong end ;) Suppose it stops you rolling backwards. ;)

Man that's bad luck :(

Hope the cost isn't too bad & glad that your neighbours were so understanding :)

My car reversed itself out of a car parking space the other day at Milton Keynes comet. No ice anwhere and clicked the handbrake up an extra notch. i reckon the gradient was about 1%

Was in the shop ten minutes when I got called out over the tannoy as it had rolled back into someones car.

Seems like something similar happened to mine with no ice.

It's being reported on my next service to see if they can do anything about it.

Am I being dim, or how can parking the car in gear have stopped it slipping on ice?

I know the Golfs had big problems wiht the handbrakes snapping, and it's wise to leave it in gear anyway, which also stresses the handbrake less when left for a long time. But surely both the brake and gear stops the wheels moving, not tyres sliding...

That's bad luck.

I myself just love the ice, fantastic to slide everywhere. Sadly furby doesn't come with 4x4 ;)

i very much doubt it slid the whole distance. i reckon the rear brakes cooled and the tension on the discs dropped and the car rolled back. if it was in gear it may not have rolled as fast of even at all. not the drivers fault. just unlucky. Always leave my car in gear after the hand brake has been put on.

imagine a furby VRS with 4 x 4 and uprated engine. what a car!
