Fabia gearbox compatabilty

Featured Replies

Hi all, looking for advice please if anyone can help,

Got stitched up buying a 2005 Fabia 1.4 16v sport. Dealer I bought it off said it was cheap as the thrust bearing was a bit rattly but nothing to worry about, thinking I'll get a new clutch kit fitted asap to cure I bought it for £800. Turns out the dealer lied, (how unusual!) and the gearbox is shot, now feeling a bit stupid for trusting a dealer - I rang to complain and basically they don't want to know so I suppose it's another lesson learnt and I'll take it on the chin! Will teach me for not doing my research first!

Had some quotes to rebuild the box around the £600 mark which is way out of my league (made redundant last year and now in the budget motoring world until things pick up!). I'm now looking at a 2nd hand unit via ebay but could do with some advice regards compatability. Loads around but presumably I need the same code which is gearbox code GRZ from engine code BKY, I've searched this on ebay and found several listed from  Ibizas/polos with the exact same codes, will these fit my Fabia?? Theres a couple listed from Fabias but too rich for my budget. I bit of digging on google has mixed answers saying Fabia is hydraulic clutch and Ibiza cable so possibly won't fit?

Any advice much appreciated..

Thanks..

Any GRZ code box should be fine. All hydraulic as far as I know. Black plastic  clutch slave cylinder on the top surface will confirm.

Many Thanks Wino,

Gives me a bit more choice of units, just looking for a local fitter- one has quoted £200, does that sound reasonable? I'd have a go myself with the Haynes Manual the Mrs will kill me if I throw any more money at it through my own mistake!

Sounds very reasonable to me.

Thanks for the advice, hopefully still not too out of pocket by the time I get it sorted!

Have you a good knack with the spanners?

The boxes weigh a ton, wouldn't want to be doing it on a driveway if I'm honest.

I'll tackle most things but never done a gearbox and I'm more fearful of doing more damage than I'd be saving! I can cope with a £100 box from ebay and £200 labour- that's a quote from a local independant clutch specialist too so he should know his onions. Just depends on the quality of the box I can get but now I have a choice from Polo/ibiza/fabia it gives me a bit more scope

yes any of the 16v box's will work if they are from the same platform just different gear ratios but most people wouldn't notice tbh anyway.
