main beam warning light intermittent

The blue main beam warning light works OK when starting off but after ten minutes stops working - lights are fine, it's just the warning isn't displaying. The other day it went out while on main beam (i.e. not while switching to/from dipped). Any ideas as to what's causing this?

Update: dash electrics needed to be replaced. £1200. Ouch!
