Any updates. Has the tank emptied,

did you get the fuel additive in and once the tank level dropped did the sloshing noise disappear?

 

How many miles did you manage to get from the tankful?

Hi Awayoffski, 

My car is with the seller for the inspection since Tuesday night..they called me yesterday to say that they have found some faults for poor MPG. So they are going to change Fuel filter and Fuel Pressure Control Valve..waiting for the parts until 11.30am this morning..

They couldn't find the problem of Sloshing though.I explained the telephone guy when and how it occures.so he updated in the system for the mechanic to dig it..

No more update up til now.

Did a short 3 mile  trip across town from cold and got 40mpg. Ditto return 2 hrs later. Next day 26 miles on dual carriageway and motorway up to 70 mph got 50mpg . I'm pleased with that.

Shorter trips = lower mpg.

I'm driving a 1.6tdi SE Business. Those miles were a combination of town and motorway.

Octavia 2015 150PS 2.0TDI manual here,  I am getting 48-55mpg on the commute (18 miles), can hit 63mpg doing 65mph on the rare motorway trip I do (from onboard computer).  

My long term average over 3000 miles is 52.2mpg from brim to brim calculations.  Mostly rural-ish roads, I wouldn't call its city driving but it could pass as being suburban. 

 

What is the maximum gear you can get into on your commute?  Are you travelling everywhere in 2nd gear?

Several short trips around town will show improving mpg if the oil and water have not cooled down.

Several interspersed short trips around town in winter will show much lower mpg as the engine will have cooled down.

 

In the first case I end up with something in the 40s at the end of the last trip while in the latter is around 10 mpg less.

Don't forget also that the computer treats all short trips as one longer trip unless the gap between them causes a reset (2-3 hours?)

Just to update after fuel filter and fuel pressure release control valve replaced-nothing improved at all, not even a tiny bit...drove around 10miles across centre london and managed to get 35mpg with annoying start stop technology. oil temp was 93 degrees though..as soon as got into dual carriageway (drove around 5 miles there at 50mph following gear recommendation) it rosed up to 43.7mpg..then started falling back again to 38mph...

Very upsetting and I realised now this is how it meant to be..

Thursday I will do a round trip London-Birmingham-London  and will monitor what it gives me.

Hi again, certainly feel for you re your mpg concerns but and its a big but, city driving really isn't conducive to decent mpg however as I live in a rural location I can only speak from very limited city driving in Leicester my mpg was dire compared to normal......

I think if you still have poor mpg following the London-Birmingham-London then I think the car 

a, quite likely has some issues however proving it to the selling dealer may prove difficult 

b, may isn't the car for you

I have a 2014 2.0 Diesel DSG Elegance Estate and over the last 74000 miles have managed an average of 48.3MPG, though I do carry a lot of weight in the boot. On Thursday I'm swapping it for a 1.6 Diesel DSG Elegance Estate, I'll report back on what I get next week.

Guys, DONT FORGET QUOTED MPG FROM SKODA. you guys are getting may be 48mpg or 52mpg when it says combined MPG is 62. but when i bought mine..it said combined MPG was 74.3 and am getting 35 to 43mpg. And i believe mine is the highest MPG QUOTED from SKODA. there was no other OCTAVIA variant that quoted 74.3mpg.

They quote EU testing, not anything to do with where you are driving a used car that might need a blast to clear out the exhaust, 

maybe a good service and a decent run to see what it can then achieve.

This is the same for all manufacturers across the whole of europe.
European emissions tests are conducted in a  temperature controlled test lab environment (witnessed by an official) following a specific driving profile defined by the regulator.

The will always use the lowest specification for each model tested (hence spare Wheel etc is an option).

They are not "real world" driving figures.

 

You cannot measure fuel economy on the trip computer over 10 miles.

How do you know the fuel tank was full the first time? How do you know you filled to exactly the same level the next time?

How big is the error from the pump reading?

What is the accuracy of the trip computer over 10miles?

Measurements over a full tank minimise the small errors from these things.

This is why any decent economy calculator website requires a minimum of 2 tanks before starting to monitor the average.

 

If you have checked the tyre pressures & the dealer has checked the fuel system, then use the car for 2 tanks of fuel & see what the average is afterwards.

Calculate the result manually or using a website like Fuelly using the odometer & the fuel reciepts.

 

If you still have a concern, take it back to the dealer again.

There are plenty of drivers on the forum who achieve 60+mpg with the 1.6tdi.

The journeys you are describing sound very short and in traffic so I wouldn't expect much more than you have got.

 

I would give it a massive thrashing to clear everything out, brim the tank full, reset all the trip computers and then wait till it's nearly empty and brim it again and calculate.

 

The manufacturer quoted figures a pie in the sky at the best of times but then short journeys can really stint it.

Yes, 3 matching and 1 odd. they are 17inches and not too much tread depth left in there.

I have driven 11yearsl old car with same 1.6HDi engine (including dpf, 11years old!!!!, no stop-start technology) and this one is just 3years old and regularly serviced by the dealer even recently Fuel filter and Fuel pressure control release valve have been changed but still big thumbs down.

Following pictures are the summary of my London-Birmingham-London fuel consumption,Since Refuelling Consumption, Average Consumption and SKODA DATA SHEET regarding this car. During my motorway drive i have managed to raise the MPG up to 65mpg only, but that time i was driving 50mph for 10 miles in 5th gear as there were road works on M6.

 

I have tried my very best to get the potential highest MPG out of this car which includes driving always by recommended gear, stick to 70-75mph (obviously sometimes had to overtake and stick to 80mph for few minutes to catch up the time), coasting etc..but no way i could get to over 65MPG in long motor way.

 

My car setting was..Normal mode/eco mode, AC off, Tyres 225/45 17 91y (all round), tyre pressure rear 37psi, front 37.5psi, tyres ages are 8years, 6years and two 2years,

Fuel from ASDA, I used an injector cleaner (Lucas) after driving like 1.25 hours.

I JUST NEED YOUR OPINION GUYS. I KNOW THE FIGURES SHOWS ON THE SHEET IS THE HIGHEST MPG THAT CAN BE OBTAINED FROM THIS CAR IN A TEST LABORATORY. BUT I WANT TO COMPARE WHAT YOU ARE GETTING FROM SAME CAR.

"EC Combined (mpg)" is not a guarantee or even a suggestion of what you will achieve in real world driving. As others have said, this is the figure achieved in 'laboratory' conditions, for comparison with the figures quoted for other cars. NOT for comparison with real world driving.

 

The figures you achieved are great, be happy. :)

they are meaningless made up figures, anybody that believes them has something wrong with their brain! always use the urban figure if you must to get an idea of what you may achieve. and from your figures it's not far out! oh and take your maxidot with a pinch of salt, that's about 15% out too! if you average 55mpg out of your car then I'd be very happy :)

Highest I've every got out of my 1.6tdi is about 80mpg on a warm summer morning, 38mile commute with very light traffic at 60mph (got 89mpg once out my Oct II Greenline in similar conditions).  Currently get for same journey anything between 55 and 70 mpg depending on traffic conditions, air temperature, wind direction, high tides and a good horoscope.

As everyone else has said the point of the EU stats is to compare cars - not what you will get - however as the test that is done is nothing like real driving you'll never get the figures published.

I dont know why you are so obsessed with the figures from a datasheet when several people already told you how the figures are calculated. & that you wont achieve them driving in real-world conditions.

 

To get mid 60s driving on the motorway at 50mph would suggest there is nothing wrong with your car.

Several people, including myself, have already given similar figures in this thread.

I would guess that if you give it a few "full" tanks to perform the calculation (measured with the fuel reciepts & odo rather than taken from the Maxidot every 20miles) your economy will improve as you get more used to the car (you adapt your driving style to the engine & Accelerator pedal) & the calculation is more accurate.

 

You are never going to get 75mpg driving at 80mph on the motorway.!!!

Plus 3 odd tyres are never going to give the best economy either.

 

You should forget about chasing 75mpg and just enjoy your car.

70 - 75 MPH is not the most economical either, if you want to max your mpg isn't it around 56mph.

Hi Gabbio, I am not obsessed at all and all the advice I have got here are very helpful..i am enjoying the car now.

it was just to get idea how best we can get out of this car and what MPG other people are getting.

 

The only reason UK Drivers ever heard about MPG's at 56 mph was that it was the same as 90kmh that was a European Speed limit 

and one that was convenient when setting up the crazy EU Testing / Legislation.

 

A long time past that a modern cars most efficient running / economy of an engines / gearing falls at the RPM that you get at 56 mph / 90 kmh.
