Tow bar options when factory fit not available

Featured Replies

You should still pursue the dealer / Skoda UK for an answer.

£4,000 is completely unreasonable.

Either Skoda pay the difference between the cost of a tow bar on a Kodiaq that wouldn't require the upgraded cooling system and the £4,000 quote, or they offer you written assurance that the warranty will not be adversely affected if you fit an (approved) aftermarket towbar.

Good luck, let is know how you get on!

Will do. I added the full saga (which took me a while!) for full disclosure in this new post (to stop polluting this one):

Hi all I am new to this and I have just bought the Skoda kodiaq 2.0dsg 4x4 190ps is my car ok to tow I am literally going to headlys tow bars on Tuesday to get one fitted when I spoke to Dereck Slacks they said if I got one from the ie the only one they do the folding one they had to change air intake parts. Will I have to do the same if I go elsewhere.

Thanks guys

Sounds like a bunch of crop

Thanks I thought that to.

?

Does fitting a EU Type Approved towbar to a vehicle that has Manufacturers official towing weights braked and unbraked then towing up to and not above those weights invalidate / void the Manufacturers Warranty or give the Manufacturer reason to refuse a warranty claim if one is made?

Do Skoda have a Disclaimer saying that certain Vehicles they sell can only have Skoda / VW Factory Fit / Approved towbars fitted and that the vehicle

can only tow having had factory preparation over and above what is on the VIN plate as the Max Gross Weights / Towing weights as advertised and given as the official tow limits?

I was told it could void my warranty if let's say the electrical system on the car fails due to the fitting of the tow bar. Note I am getting the vehicle specific wiring done.

'If' the wiring failed, if the ECU is fried, if the fuse / relay system can not cope,  like the Cooling system.  All these 'if's'.

The relevant part is if the Engine / Coolant System etc fails.

EU law / legislation is not allowing restrictive practices, like you must have Main Dealer Servicing or a Warranty is void.

The can not have anyone else fit a towbar, and as it is the vehicle is not suitable for a Tow Bar but EU / Type Approved with Official Towing Weights,

would be an interesting legal discussion.

I have had to tow bar fit but they seem to be having problems with the rear assists and blind spot when I put it in reverse it deactivates it ? They are still trying to fix it fingers crossed they can

Hmm, these tales of woe are making the factory fit tow bar at £860 seem more palatable...

That should happen if you have something connected to the electrics...they should still work fine if the towbar is attached but nothing is plugged into the electrics.

Yea he said that but when it Neva had anything connected it still Neva worked it was disabling it  he did reset it all twice and got it sorted but he also said when I plug my Caravan in and then unplug it I will have to activate it again myself off the buttons on steering wheel

Hi guys it has happened again. When I put my car in reverse my blind spot and rear assist disables it's self just as if I had my caravan on but it's not does anyone know how to over come this problem I had it back to headlys towbar once they fixed it but now it has started again..

Also does the Skoda kodiaq dsg 4x4 need the coolant system updated coz I had a swan neck fitted but not by Skoda

You've got to keep taking it back. Let the dealer know too each time you are inconvenienced by taking it back, after all it was the dealers choice of tow bar fitter right? If so then they need to help here too.

The additional cooling system requirements relate to the 1.4 TSI petrol engines only. Your diesel should not be affected. This isn't 100% confirmed though, it is information I have gathered through this and other forums, feel free to reach out to Skoda UK and ask too.

Thanks

Hi BirtyWhistle - yes silver1011 has it right, the only model that i know requires the cooling upgrade is the 1.4 125ps petrol engine - might even be only the SE model too.

Update here is that after my social media and forum campaign, Skoda Winchester have finally written to us to say they will pay for the cooling upgrade (although they did ask me to remove my social media posts, which i wont be doing, i will be telling everyone that they ended up doing the right thing though, which is the right result for everyone).
