Thule roof baskets

Featured Replies

Good morning,

I'm interested in purchasing a roof basket for our Yeti. I've been looking at theses two models from Thule: Trail (M or L) and the Canyon XT.

Does anybody have any experience with either of these? If so, how's the noise? Photos would be great.

The Canyon is cheaper, less elegant bust seems more versatile.

Thanks.

Hello dizurik, we had the previous version on our Volvo (or maybe 2 versions ago Thule Xpedition) and while it was useful, they are not as practical as we had hoped, and ended going back to using a very big roof box (Thule 800.)

Basically, everything gets very, very wet, and you amass a fantastic insect collection on everything. Tarps etc never sit properly and are a pain to lash down, and need redoing every couple of hundred miles.

Empty, not much noise at all (we had the optional wind deflector,) loaded .... wow as loud as a very loud thing.

Plus check the weight your going to carry, like a roof box the Yeti's roof load are dependant on 2 things, 1 what your putting on it, and 2 what your putting in that.

Seriously not wanting to teach anyone to suck eggs .... but have you considered?

i.e.

Roof bars depending on weight have a load limit, usually 100KG for the aluminium types and 75KG for the steel (square bar type.)

The cross bars we had were 7KG (aluminium)

The basket we had was 15KG

The Yeti's roof load (100KG)

So example above ... if using aluminium you are at 79KG potential load (4KG more than the baskets capacity (the one we used))

and if we had been using steel you at 60KG potential max load in the basket.

Do your sums and take care.

Hope that helped.

Thank you for your input TruckbusUK.

The roof basket would be used for camping trips and would hold our (large) tent and some additional stuff which I plan to put un aluminium cases. The idea is to offload the trunk. I think in our case the weight is a non-issue.

Rain won't be such an issue as we would use it mainly in summer and/or heading south. We also have a Thule box, though not as high as your 800 and therefore not as practical.

As for the noise…

Take care.
