58mpg on 1.4 Tsi 140ps

Featured Replies

I can't really believe it i got 58mpg on my 22miles trip.my long term average mpg is 45-46. I really thinking trip computer is cheating too much.

That's easily possible on the right sort of journey, where you dont need much throttle input, cruising on the motorway etc.

Petrol is so much more economical these days than in the past, hopefully the car buying public will wake up to this and stop buying diesels, and the air quality will improve.

Got 53mpg out of my 1.2 TSi yesterday on a 25 mile trip, and I wasnt being that gentle with it, so could have got more like you.

61 mpg is the best I've had in my 1.4 tsi combi, on a couple of occasions. I've also borrowed my wife's audi A3 2.0 tdi on the odd occasion to work and struggle to beat my cars average mpg. The 1.4 tsi is fantastic.

I know I'm going to get shot down in flames for this but..........multiple fanboy alert?

Well not massively? Two people showing good MPG, and the other showing the polar opposite...

I guess you and I have different interpretations of the word "good".

I'd be happy with those figures...I'm lucky to see mid 50's average in my diesel, and all that really does is go up and down the M40!

61 mpg on a 25 mile journey is the best (or worst, for TMWNA) from my 1.4 TSI 140 so far.

But this thread is about petrol engines producing astronomical fuel economy figures.

I'd have given my right arm for the quoted figures in my VRS diesel instead of the sh1tty 43mpg I achieved

Blimey, another one.

Is it half-term or something?

The 1.4tsi (both EA111 & EA211 ) can be very economical if driven carefully (Best I've had was 53mpg for a tankful driving through Austria / before I started using Spritmonitor) but drink like George Best if you exercise the loud pedal too much (Worst I've had was a tankful of 37mpg - never had 27 average though!).

The tsi's are very sensitive to driving styles / conditions but I don't think I'll be buying another diesel in the future (well never say never). All I can compare is the same driving style/driver and mind numbingly boring commute across different cars -  Superb I 1.9pd 50mpg , Superb II(facelift) 1.4tsi 46mpg (not via on board computer)

Despite negative comments above - these sort of figures may be useful for people considering moving away from diesel cars before we are "persuaded" to by the goverment.

My 12 mile journey has 4 giveways, 11 roundabouts, 5 sets of traffic lights and believe it or not 3 gatzo's !!!!

So, I've a few big brake moments in that average speed or thats my story & I'm sticky to it.

Mixture of average speed cameras (covering about 12 miles) and mobile speed vans (covering 20 miles) for me with the last third in slow moving traffic (usually sort of moving) due to the traffic aggravation schemes around York - Joy. Boring generally low speed journey with a bit of traffic

it is just a single trip,8miles motorway.

I've posted a lot in this forum regarding the 1.4tsi and its potential for good consumption so none of the above is any surprise to me, except TMWNA's claim which is clearly fabricated :)

My Octavia does not have a central display screen so I have to rely on the maxidot info but the reported averages have proven to be remarkably accurate when checked against real consumption.

My only reservation is that it is almost impossible to confirm how accurate the display is when you encounter exceptional conditions because they tend to be limited runs although I have no real reason to doubt them.

One short 15km round trip late night Dad taxi run (mostly 60kmph restricted dual carriageway and using cruise control) and I averaged 3.9L/100 on the display. No proof though as the daughter would have considered me photographing the display as just a little too weird.

The world record for a production vehicle on a tankful of petrol was achieved by a 1.2L triple pot Peugeot 308 on a closed circuit with a team of drivers where they averaged 99mpg (2.9L/100) at an average speed of 57kph.

The Peugeot is unusually light though at about 1100kg.

The Octavia 1.4tsi could not match that but the new 1.0tsi could possibly get close?

Consumption has not been so good lately due to the high number of short journeys and the 'Indian summer' weather we have had requiring constant air-con use. that weather pattern has just broken so hopefully more flattering consumption will be resumed.

To be honest I rarely need to go on the motorway, but when I do its only around the 70 mph Mark. At that I'm easily in the 50's for mpg. My work journey is 13 miles each way through fairly congested traffic. To work i can get mid 40's to low 50's  mpg. Yet the journey home I struggle to get above 45 mpg. A

You are doing better than me then.

At a true 70mph (not speedo) I get 5.7L/100 (49mpg). Flat, no wind, 20 degrees, no traffic. Been like that since new.

It does not take much to push it over the 50mpg though ie tailwind, draft from other fast moving traffic.

Do you have DSG? I think their 7th gear runs about 300rpm lower than the equivalent top manual gear (mine shows a smidge over 2500rpm at 70mph).

omg 61.4! how did u do that? what s ur cruise speed? and when do u change up gear? 2000r/m or lower?

From memory that was a late-night run from Luton airport to my home in Bedford, using the A6 and not the M1.  I would have cruised at the 60mph speed limit on the A6 - it has many speed cameras -  and was probably changing up around 1800-2000rpm.   Luton airport is about 100m or so in elevation above where I live, and (again from memory) there was a reasonable southerly breeze pushing me along.  61mpg is not an everyday occurrence, and is the best I've seen in a little over 2 years of ownership.

An indicated 50mpg+ is not hard to achieve on free-flowing 50 to 60mph A-roads if you are careful.

IMHO, you'll never see above 50mpg in town, if the cruise speed is above 70mph for any prolonged period, or if you use all of the performance of the engine.  It is just as easy to get <35mpg as >50mpg.
