Clunky gearbox

Featured Replies

Hi all recently got a 66 plate vrs Octavia , any other members suffering from a ( for a better word ) clunky gearbox or is this normal .thanks

The gear box is not the best.

There realy bad when cold, when the car has been driven for 30 minuits the changes are better. The 1st to 2nd is the poorest change, usualy baulking and clanging. The viscosity of the gear oil has a huge impact on gear box feel. When i have driven the car for a while and the engine oil temp has reached 90plus the changes are better. This is due to the oversized syncros used on 1st and 2nd as the gear box is design to handel big torque, mq350 that is.

The fact its a cable linkage dosent help, it could be an alignment issue.

This is realy common on all vag deisels, some of the guys i work with have golfs, new ones and have exactaly the same issue.

On the two manuals I've had previously, when lowish mileage I complained about 1st and 1st to 2nd being baulky (as per Alpha2110). But in hindsight it didn't bother me later on, so I believe they improve with mileage.
