Low dipped and full beam

Featured Replies

I have an L&K with the fancy headlights, but I find that they are set too low to the point that I have drive at night with full beam on and no one coming in the other direction flashes me; my car doesn't have the light assist.

The lights should be self levelling but my car's appear to be at a level too low.

Has anyone noticed this with their S3 and is there a way to adjust them up a little?

AFAIK it should be possible to adjust the height with VCDS.

I think I have some issues with mine too although not the same as above. It seems to me as though my lights are pointing more to the left than straight ahead, and I noticed last night that when I hit a particularly bad bump in the road, my headlight beam shakes, suggesting that it's not secure in its housing.

If the light shakes it's more likely the bulb is insecure

You have 2 adjusters on each headlight the inner ones control up and down and the outer are left and right easy to adjust mine were low too parked 6 feet from garage door and marked the door where the top of the beam was and moved it up 25 mm on door and voila !

you will need an Allen key for adjuster I think it's a 4 or 5 mm one

Mine do this, but to be honest I hadn't given much thought to it - my previous car was a wallowy 4X4 so I assumed the difference was more that the suspension was 'harder' in the superb. Should the headlight beam remain constant and not 'move' when hitting a bump?

It never had the headlight "shake" in my SII or my Merc that I have in this car.

I was surprised to find that there was no headlamp adjuster on the dash. Every car I've had in the last 20+ years has had this facility - particularly useful on an estate, which is likely to carry heavy loads, at times.

Thats because xenons have to self adjust.

If VCDS is not connected whilst adjusting them there is serious damage that can be caused by the self levelling system.

Typo

If you have halogens like me in SE, page 67 of the manual states it can be adjusted in infotainment - menu car - settings - light - headlight range control.

P.S. Did not tried it yet.

Thanks, I will have a look at that.

However, if that is the case, it's another example of replacing simple functions that can be carried out without taking your eyes off the road, with something that is buried within the menus of the touchscreen.

are you sure the adaptive lighting is working? As you have Bi-Xenon they should adjust when cornering and speed. A search of this forum shows they quite often don't work, needs a trip to dealer to do a config download.

I have them as an option on my SE Business, initially, beam very low and didn't adjust for speed/cornering. A quick trip to dealer to plug in service laptop, all ok now.

Just to clarify, is it just bi-xenon's you have or do you have the intelligent lighting system too? I have bi-xenon's on mine but they don't do anything other than point straight ahead.

Cheers.

All Bi-Xenons on the Superb 3 have AFS (adaptive front system), should move with speed and steering input.

Do the lights move when you start the car at night?

Do you use Eco on the drive mode selection? if so the AFS is switched off.

I've noticed a little shake in the beem going over rough road. Last few cars I've had came with Xenons and it's the first time I've had this. Everything else to do with the lights is spot on though.

I too have the same issue @Chiily - my headlights are too low but the dealer claims there is nothing wrong!?

Come to think of it, my lights also shake when I go over major bumps.

Don't the xenons 'float' in the housing so that they can actually freely move as the AFS dictates?  If they were fixed then AFS wouldn't work, no?

My last car was a Mazda with adaptive xenons and they never shook. But it has to be really rough road to shake them in the superb so im not worried. I'd imagine it's to do with the AFS.

Ahh, I didn't realise that. Yes, I drive the car in eco mode. No wonder I don't see them turning then.

Thats not really true....adjusted my MKII xenons several times and everything is just fine...as far as you turn adjustment knobs gently and you make half turn....right now not blinding oncoming traffic and the road is visible like it should.

Oh yes they certainly move when I steer the car.

Well the car is due at the dealers for a couple of other bits and bobs, so I'll ask them to point them up a bit.

I will have a look for the adjusters too.

Yes.  The adaptive lights are connected to the suspension hence why you will see them shake on a very rough road.

Returning to the topic.

AFAIK ALL the Skoda model line has problems with short low beam. At least the ones with xenons.

Only option here is to adjust the beam manually longer (change the angle) and then teach the self levelling system the new zero position with VCDS.

I was not aware of this either. I have similar issue with dipped lights being highly inadequate on my 2016 Superb III L&K. Any advice on how I should approach dealer to encourage them to investigate? Last week the service chap at Oxford switched lights on and off in the daylight and said they were fine :-(
