Changing personal plate to old registration

Featured Replies

I have a personal plate but want to put a plain age related plate on the car to sell it.

If I use the DVLA online system to put the personal number on retention does DVLA issue a new "old" number online or do I have to do something else?

I have looked at the DVLA website but cannot find what happens after taking a reg number off.

Thanks in advance,David

yes they send you a log book with a new number.

or in my case the one it was pre-registered on before I bought it.

I thought that a car which was going to have a personalised plate from new was assigned a normal number plate anyway? This then sits in the background waiting for use when the personalised plate is transferred in the future. It is almost a certainty that this wiĺ happen during the cars life?

We bought a 3 year old fabia estate which had a personalised plate when we test drove it. It was supplied to us with the original registration reinstated.

Usually you get the original number back but it doesn't really matter as long as you get a number.

If the car is bought new, and registered with a personal plate at first registration then there is no other plate assigned to it.

If you want to remove the personal plate, you do it online and DVLA assign an age related plate at random.

They then send new V5 and amend the VED record.

It is up to you to advise your insurance company of the change of registration.

Yep. I've had my plate on a pre-reg car, which was prior registered on a normal plate, and now its on a brand new car.

The first already had a XX52XXX plate assigned to it which it got back when I removed the private plate (just to drive it to the scrappers mind).

The next has never had any other registration identity than my own reg so when I dispose of it DVLA will assign a suitably aged one form their back catalogue.

Either way, you must remove the cherished reg before selling the car, or you lose all rights to the number.
