Columbus has lost his direction.

Featured Replies

Hi everyone. The RNS510 unit in my Elegance seems to have lost it's sense of direction. The compass on the MFD often indicates 180degrees opposite to the actual direction being driven. Also the maps are all haywire. The GPS shows 0/10 satellites and "NO FIX". Am I right in assuming that I have a GPS antenna problem? If so, what remedial action would you kind folks suggest?

Many thanks,

Drefaldwyn.

Yep. You need a new antenna usually.

Thanks for the advice folks. Next job will be to get the unit out of the dash ..... previous owner drilled out the torx holes in the fixing screws - for security. Doh!

Jeesh. Hope he did the same to his wifes chastity belt. That would work too until the time you need to.....  :wondering:

Dremmel a slot in the screw head. Simples

Try thes ,unless the heads are tough

http://www.toolstation.com/shop/p38732?searchstr=screw removal tools

Possibly also available from JML/ Screwfix & Machine mart.

But it's following it's namesake, who thought he'd found India ,when it was just the West Indias.

I've got a Dremel - is there enough room to get the disc cutter in? It's a while since I removed the trim on the Columbus and can't remember how much space there is. Thanks for the advice.

Yep, should be enough room in there to get in. Just cover the screen with something to prevent swarf damage. Hot shards of metal might not be good for it.

Thanks for your advice Rustynuts. Much appreciated. I'm away from home at the moment so haven't got the tools to check it out for myself.

Victor Meldrew moment ..... "I don't believe it"!!!! No sooner had I ordered a replacement antenna off a well known auction site, than the satnav found it's satellites again!!!!! Clearly there's a fault, maybe intermittent, so I'll replace the antenna anyway.

Update:  Fitted new antenna (£5 ish jobbie off the bay) and stuck it on top of the ledge above the rear of the Columbus using double-sided sticky pads. I had hoped to locate it on top of the Columbus using the inbuilt magnet on the antenna but there wasn't quite enough clearance. Anyway, I powered up and checked the map screen, saw that it had found 8/13 satellites and had a 3D fix. Whooppee! I thought. However my delight was short-lived as it seemed to think that I was in a field a couple of hundred metres away from my house. Doh!  I'll have another look at it tomorrow!

It'll sort itself out when you drive a bit. It's just lost a little at the moment and it'll find the correct position.

Thanks for the reassurance Rustynuts. I'll have a little drive out in the morning and see what evolves. I hope I don't get lost!
