1.4 16V Egr blank or not?

Featured Replies

Hello everyone, i own a mk1 fabia petrol 1.4 16v.

My throttle response is a bit delayed and i am also getting a computer code 16786 which is excessive egr flow.

So at some point in the next few days i wanted to take out and clean my throttle body, and also clean my egr valve... but i was thinking would it be better to blank the egr valve? Does anyone know the advantages and disadvantages for this petrol engine? Will it be beneficial? Thanks in advance :)

No, it's a TERRIBLE idea, fix the problem by cleaning everything and replacing the valve if necessary. The engine will not run properly without EGR.

Ok thank you, i shall clean it and if its really bad then il replace it. Can you just tell me why its a terrible idea? what would it do? Thank you :)

If you blanked it you'd swap 16876 for 16875, insufficient flow, wouldn't you? You'd also lose some fuel efficiency in cruise conditions and you'd have higher peak combustion temperatures which might accelerate exhaust valve wear.

We have a polo 1.4 16v and it is very sensitive to which fuel we use,it definitely does not like the ordinary 95oct stuff (although runs reasonably on branded 95),runs very well on the 'super' unleaded's.Our car was  sufferring from 'Throttle Lag/Flat spot when using 95oct fuel.

Obviously the fuel type will not give the egr code but just mentioning in case useful.
