First Impressions and First Questions

Featured Replies

Ok so I'm new to Skoda brand and as in the register am now the proud owner of a 1.6 diesel DSG mk3 :)

First impressions A1, have now covered around 700 miles in last 2 weeks, finding out all sorts of nick knacks on it like auto lights, cubby holes under seats etc. But ( there's always a but ) twice this weekend the EML came on, no perceived problems on performance, manual says exhaust problem! Anyways popped into my local all brands mechanic today and he threw his OBD gizmo on it, and low and behold no faults logged in memory.

Now the presumptions on my part, would it have been anything to do with DPF,  OBD says 18.5g of carbon ( is that high or low?) Also should there be an actual DPF light, the one with the spotty exhaust in the handbook, if so where is it and does it light up when you turn on the ignition as I can't see or find it

Anyways mechanic doesn't seem too worried but I hate niggles

Thanks Mike

Is the car new?

I would get the engine very hot, long fast runs, rev the engine. Does the engine do regens, 1000 rpm at idle? If its second hand the car could have been used on short runs plenty of regen interruptions.

Modern diesel engines need to be used for longer journeys to get good and hot, primaraly longer motorway journeys. A main dealer should be able to tell if there is any issue with dpf, they can do a forced regen failing that its a new dpf.

New to me, 64k on it, I'll keep an eye on it and maybe get my own OBD reader, see if there's a fault showing when the light is actually on. Light wasn't on when I went to mechanic and his reader showed nothing in the memory but I'm sitting in the car typing this and looking at the light on again.  Not looking like a regen rpm is steady at 750 and oil temp at 90/91 degrees, I assume the oil temperature would also increase if they're trying to get the engine to run hot but that's me guessing.

So still have the question about the DPF lamp does my Skoda have one, if so where? Manual mentions it but can't see where it's physically supposed to be and nothing looking like it when you turn the ignition on.

The engine Mil Lamp is completely different from the DPF filter lamp.

If your MIL lamp has come on while the engine is running, take it back to the dealer to be investigated.

If the light is on, there should be an error code set.

All diesels now have a DPF.

The installation on the VAG engines seems very good & it is very robust in the Octavia.

Even for regular short trips or commutes the system is capable to take care of itself.

Ignore all the people who tell you need to drive at 2500rpm for 15minutes if this or that happens.

Just drive like normal unless you see the DPF lamp - which would be rare (its a tank icon with dots in it as shown above).

Ah Ha I was looking for a dashlamp like the MIL or Glowplug, at least I know where it is now.

So any ideas on why a MIL would light up but not log to the memory?

There is a lamp for the DPF in the Dashboard too (same symbol - a tank with dots Inside).

If you look at the display in really bright light you will be able to see the outline.

If the dealer find something you should ask them why a generic OBD scanner didnt find it.

I thought it was a OBD requirement to at least report the fault code number even if it was manufacturer specific code which didnt conform to the standard numbering convention.

Are you sure it was the MIL lamp & not the ESP/ABS light flashing as you two-wheeled it round a corner? ;)

I don't do 2 wheels lol, deffo the MIL lamp, mechanic I've used for last 5 years has all the gizmos, OBD reader from Snap On ( i think ) shows up things like 18.5g of soot but nothing in cars memory for MIL, might get a cheap OBD reader and leave it plugged in see if there's anything when the lamp is actually on.
