Front Assistant

Featured Replies

Hi to everyone.

This is my first topic here so I count on admin to tell me if the topic is in the right spot or not :)

Anyhow... Recently I got a new 2017 O3 FL, and I added Front Assistant to the equipment, which apparently saved me from crashing at least two times already.

I didn't know what are the limits of the assistant, and I still don't know so I'd use this opportunity to ask you if you know what are limits of the assistant?

I'll share my experiences with you and hope you to share yours with me.

Before I go to actual breaking and stopping cases, I'd just share that I could see while driving on the highway that I get a small warning sign that I'm to close to the car in front regardless to the speed I'm driving at. From far away...

As for the braking, I red somewhere that this Front Assistant is only a "city function" and that it works from 6 - 35mph.

So I decided to try it. Almsot every day I travel to my office in the city and in 90% of the cases there is very heavy traffic. One day I was driving in this queue, slowly, cca 10 - 15mph so I just decided to let it go, but with my foot ready on the pedal... By default, my Front Assistant was set to 'medium' sensitivity. I was getting really close to the guy in front of me and then, all of the sudden, BAM! It just stopped on it's own cca 1.5m behind the car in front of me. Warning me with the sound and image all over the maxi dot. It sounded like when your ABS activates. So ok, it works! I'm happy :)

The day after I was driving a bit faster in a different part of the city over a 3 lane bridge. At the end of the bridge 3 lanes narrow into 2 and I was going in. I was driving cca 30mph, took a look over the shoulder to see if I have enough space to go in and then car stopped so hard that I almost fell from the seat. What happened? When I was looking over my shoulder, the guy in front of me hit the breaks. I would definitely crash into him. Car stopped again cca 1.5m behind the car in the front. Again ABS sound.

At that point I decided to set my Front Assistant sensitivity to maximum sensitivity.

One day I was driving on the open road outside the city, cca 50mph, the guy in front of me hit the brakes and made a turn, I put my foot on the brake and I would have stopped on time, but since Front Assistant was set to the most sensitive, the system decided I didn't press the brake hard enough so I just felt my brake pedal sink on it's own and car braking rapidly. The moment this car in front made a full turn, the system stopped braking and the car continued to drive. Again, sound and image signals, this time without the ABS turning on.

OK, so now I know it works on speed that's more than 35mph, and at a at least 30m distance.

The other day I was driving on the highway at cca 75 - 80mph. Again, the car in front hit the brakes, I hit them as well, but the car decided to assist so again, brake pedal sinking, car slowing down... The car was cca 30 - 40m in front of me.

So those are my experiences.

Do you  have some of your own, or do you know if those systems limits are somehow somewhere defined?
