Engine management light and high temp.

Sooooo, I took the plunge 3 days ago and purchased a beautiful white Skoda Oct Vrs estate which seemrd in a1 condition, HOWEVER, the engine management came on yesterday whilst driving through town. 

I know a vehicle tech who has the VCDS so, a check was carried out with the faults highlighted below.

A reset was carried out and the engine management light came off, HOWEVER, driving this morning, it came back on, and mor worryingly, whilst driving, what can only be described as a hail hitting windscreen noise arose (to the point where I was looking for imaginary hailstones) then the engine overheating light came on, temp rose, then dropped back to normal within seconds.

 

I know this is a long winded and possibly confusing post, but if anyone could shed some light it would be much appreciated. The car is currently at Skoda Fish Btos Swindon awaiting further diagnostics and repair on under the dealers warranty!

Yeah, it is a diesel and an ex fleet car. Did a lot of research and the general concensus was as long as a full service history is present it should be hunky dory?!

Kind of concerning I may have bought a kipper!

It's had all the relevant services as per the intervals, admitedley on mileage, not time! 

I was a tad shocked as I gave it a solid road test, checked everything over and all seemed fine.

heres hoping the warranty covers it, or the dealers having it back! 

 

The worrying thing was the crackling and high temp that occurred, very bizarre

I have a 3 year old at 46k that I bought 6 months ago.  7 speed auto box.  Overheating, usual red lights, aircon turns off etc. From what I read the water pump that should heat the car up at start up (small volume of water) heats up as it should do, when it starts to boil the oil and water, electric thermostat which is part of the water pump should kick in and open main engine coolant reservoir once engine is nice and hot (protecting from cold start damage winter use). temp drops.  On a few models around 2013-1014 they were supplied with dodgy pumps that would stick in the startup mode (small water volume) and hence overheat as they would not open up when reached running temp.  Just had my car in to Guildford lookers this week and they took the car apart suspecting this.  Turned out it was this and they replaced the pump belts etc FOC as under the approved 1 year warranty.  Bit of an upsell for them but yes they even offered me the option to replace the belt for cost price as they were already in there anyway and labour would be covered FOC.

Yes mine has 80k on the clock already and coming up to three years old in Sept. Full service history and runs very well. Had the water pump issue, but if it's out of warranty look at the other posts on here about getting some sort of refund from Skoda UK via your local dealer.

Many thanks for the replies. Luckily enough, the dealer and Skoda are liaising amongst each other to get the problem fixed. 

Excuse my ignorance, but the water pump issues are related to the "overheating" and not the engine management light/ lambda sensor vcds read out?!

correct, the water pump issue starts with the temperature gauge "sticking" rising very high then back to normal.

After a while it gets worse & you will get a "stop engine now" message as the coolant stays too high.

 

Your MIL light is caused because the Lambda sensor is open circuit according to the VCDS readout.

This should be a separate issue.

Many thanks. Here's hoping Skoda/ the dealer get it sorted in good time! It's a bit of a joke having a car 2 days and it goes tits up, but at least the dealer is willing to sort the issue (didn't seem too impressed when I told hi, it was in a Skoda garage to be done!). 

Im assuming there's gonna be a hefty bill, whatever?!

So Skoda have just quoted the dealer £275 for the lambda sensor and £740 for the water pump/ cambelt. 

The dealer will gladly pay, however, refuses to pay the £200 for the cambelt kit. 

Still, seems reasonable enough?

What engine does your car have? 1.6 TDI or 2.0 TDI?

 

My (new to me) almost 4 year old 71k 2.0TDI has had full Skoda dealer service history. No problem with water pump so far *touchwood* I'm hoping to get to next year for the 5 yr scheduled timing belt and water pump replacement.

I have the 2.0Tdi 180 bhp in a VRS. I hope you make it to the 5 year change. A lot of posts on here about the issue. However, if it does occur don't just accept it's a cost to you. It is a "known" issue despite what some dealers will tell you.

Quick update: 

the water pump and timing belt are being changed at a cost of £779, and as it's a vrs, does not come under the vehicles eligible under the Skoda service plan! 

As said previous, the guy who sold me the car is shelling out for the work (minus the £200 cambelt kit cost!), however, it would be nice to get the cost down for him so may hav e to speak to Skoda direct irt the legacy issue.

Agree, don't see why a vRS makes a différences & its not shown on any "small print" on the website.

Its the same engine as the other 2l TDIs so the cost should be the same.

Just go to another garage & ask for a price.

Well, with the garage dealing direct with the dealer who sold me the car, thought I would get in touch with skoda uk, who asked Fishponds Swindon the question why they're charging so much. The answer: "they didn't have to sign up to the service/ pricing plan so can charge whatever rate she they want! 

I personally think it's f*****g disgusting (considering several skoda garages I rang would honour the service price on a vrs!) that they can do this, however, they've got me by the balls as all the local vag specialists can't get me in for a month! (Still, only £200 coming out of my pocket for the cambelt kit so not too fussed, just want to drive my car!)

what ive learned, steer clear of Fishponds Skoda (Swindon).
