Retro fit cruise to early vRS

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Spent hours reading through the numerous threads on retro fitting cruise control to the early mk3.

I just wanted to sense check some of the info I have gathered with anybody that has ideally fitted this kit themselves, rather than paid for a dealer fit.

I think I'm correct that there are 2 part numbers for the replacement stalks.

5E0054690A and 5E0054690

The Skoda advice is to install the part number ending in an 'A' for cars with multi function steering wheel and board computer but this leaves you with a useless set of buttons on the right hand stalk.

The part number without the 'A' on the end is listed for use with cars without a board computer and does not have the maxidot control buttons on it, as per the factory fit setup.

My understanding is dealers would refuse to fit this on a vRS with mfsw as it goes against the advice listed on there internal system but in a thread I read, James@Pentagon_Seat has said he has fitted many CC stalks without the maxidot buttons to cars with mfsw's and they have worked perfectly as internally the parts are identical, just 1 has buttons.

I hope you're all still with me.

It was noted that the dealer would also order special software to code in and activate the new stalk. I couldn't get a straight answer on what this software does or how it works.  I'm of the understanding that the dealer diagnostic tool can't do coding to cars to change things it didn't leave the factory with, so I'm guessing the software is some sort of automated script that will change the long coding to tell the car it now has cruise fitted, I would imagine it woks much the same way the 'apps' work in Obdeleven, I feel the server activation thing may be to do with allowing the dealer tool to write the coding, not cars ability to accept it.

With all the above in mind, why can't I just go to a scrap yard and pull the stalks off a mk3 with factory fitted cruise and code in using vcds?

This seemed like such an important point to retrofit on my Fabia 1 ( which I did myself at the time, despite the car being very, very new).

Seems mad now. Oh well well beyond warranty concerns on that carn now being almost 10 :D

Well, I don't have it on my vRS petrol, but I'm kind of glad and couldn't be bothered if it was there or not.

In fact I don't really use it so much anymore on my Fabia vRS 1 TDI ( only reason I can think, is average speed areas but thats it)..maybe if I was doing like 300 miles to Cornwall but thats really rare.

I didn't buy a vRS to be cruising about, particularly the petrol. Just seems like a huge hassle for next to no gains particularly with the latest coding.

I did it to both my Octavia vRS's and you dont even notice the unused rocker switch is even there. There's plenty of unused switches or gaps in switches in the car anyway.

To go to a scrap yard if you can find one, you'll have to take the steering wheel assembly off as well as get the wire that goes with it off which goes somewhere in the fuse box (?).5989a7238e738_2014-03-2314_45_07.thumb.jpg.6709c72d9537c8f3bda32948e84bf022.jpg

It can be coded with VCDS I believe. However yes, its a single use code I believe that the dealer uses to activate it. For the sake of just getting it done with no messing or problems, I just let them do the whole job.

I wouldn't be without it anyway now. Both are petrol.

Did you get anywhere with this? Thinking of doing it to my 2014 VRS
