I know track cars run with more camber for a positive turn in feel to a corner (F1 cars run a lot of front camber hence they wear out tyres very quickly) but I would be horrified chucking tyres away with so such thread left on the outside of the tyres. My tyres which are checked once a month for correct pressures ensure good economy and wear evenly across the thread.

Still not the best about 3-3.5mm on the outside.

Getting cold now so having to tape up the coolers.

Could you not get one of those plastic grille covers to keep the heat in? Also, how much of a pain is it to get the grille off? I'm planning on putting some stripes on the grille and I'd rather have it off the car for that.

The standard one is a pia to get off. Mine is just held on by 2 screws. I can do but it’s still going to get airflow to it which I want to stop so it actually gets heat

struggles to get to 60 degrees just now.

Had a little trip down to Donington Park with Darkside last week to check out their new project cars and go out on track with them :)

On the drive back at low speed braking heard a grinding noise from the back with low speed braking turns out the pads and discs now needed a change.....

Less than a year and 15k miles on these.

  • 1 month later...

Car's been laid up pretty much since the middle of january due to ill health and being in hospital. Took it out when i was feeling abit better, thought it would be difficult to start but fired up straight away.

Traction isn't great in the snow though

Also noticed that since its been parked up someones managed to fit the nearside rear bumper. was only just painted when it was at darkside last year just when they openned the body shop.

Well that's that, looks like this could be the end of it. gearbox decided to let go today, wasn't doing anything stupid just overtaking a truck.

Will need to think long and hard if i want to keep putting money into it or not as it will need a 6 speed. No point in putting another 5 speed in it although this could be the end.

Sorry to hear about the gearbox, your enjoyable reads and updates will be missed.

Any thoughts for the replacement and upgrade path, a 4x4 Crossover/SUV perhaps, Karoc, Seat Areca or VW T Roc.

For a car thats gotta be north of 100k miles making 3 times the power it was ever meant to on a stock gearbox (sans diff) i'd say it did well. I would've thought 5th would've gone first though. I'll miss the updates if you do decide to part ways with it.

Just ticked over 109k and ive had it since 32k so its done well for 4 years 77k and its life has all been documented :D

Thought were maybe sticking the engine into a mk2 FL Octavia vRS DSG but i want a 4x4 one and they didnt do the 4x4 one but i think with that set up it would frighten a fair few cars off the lights. I have toyed with the idea of a superb estate 280 but i've got a Fiesta ST just now and the fuel economy on that is giving me the fear. 30mpg on a run at 50mph!

I've had some good friends and companies that have been with me over the years with this car and a few have offered to help out with getting it back on the road but will still require a fair amount of money.

My youngest has a 55  Polo GT 1.9 with 230hp , he's thinking getting a Yeti 4x4 and dropping this engine into it.

So your thought if a Octavia vrs sounds good. I've still have thoughts if getting another sports cat or hybrid turbo, but it's expensive,  for mine.

Stick a dsg in it with Kevlar clutches then you’ll really be putting power down , should be able to do it as the caddy vans have auto gearboxes and that engine is from a caddy isn’t it ?

It’s from an Ibiza.

Wheres the fun in a dsg? These are cheap fun warm/hot hatches that are generally fun to drive, wouldnt a dsg take away from that. A dsg would be more expensive than a 5 or a 6 speed surely?

To be honest if the money was there I’d fit a dsg.

Its your car and its a much faster car than mine granted, but I cant help but imagine the big grin you must get slamming it into the next gear during a hard pull. I feel like a dsg would just make it into a car thats all about getting the next tenth of a second off a quarter mile time, as opposed to a nutty diesel hot hatch.

Not when after slamming it into gear you hear a bang then what sounds like throwing a brick in a cement mixer :D
