Oil Differences Fixed/Variable

Featured Replies

Fellow Briskodians,

I currently own a 2011 Octavia vRS TSI. I find the fixed and variable a tad confusing. Last oil change i used 5/30 oil which i now just found out is the variable preferred oil.

I religiously change oil every 12 months. Does it really matter if i use 5/30 or 5/40 oil each change? cant bear the thought of a 2 year oil change....

The Recommended Oil by VW / Skoda for fixed or variable servicing is VW504 00 so 5w 30 FS Long LIfe.

You can change it any time you want, no need to keep it beyond 10,000 miles, up to you, filter changes being important.

Seeing as there are Issues or can be with TSI's 1.2, 1.4, 1.8 or 2.0,  or can be and Long Life oil does not mean Long Living engines

why not use just use VW502 00 oil which is suitable for Fixed Servicing, so 5w 40 Full Synthetic.

Do the fixed servicing up to 10,000 miles or before if you want.

I think the general school of thought is change yearly and use 502 spec 5w40, keeping oil level at higher end of dipstick. Assuming you're in the Uk.

Thanks for advice guys. Anyone have any experience of using ECP's Triple QX oils?

Last change i used Petronas 5w/30. Definitley changing to 5w/40 this time but spoiled for choice......

Specific oil brand choice comes down a fair bit to personal opinion. It is hard to get the hard proof of two engines running side by side, same conditions, different oil brands, same vw standard and a comparison made.

You can use either VW 504.00 or VW 502.00 in a multi grade range that suits the climate.  As you have been doing, changing oils on a fixed regime at 12 mths / 10k miles max regardless will do your engine no harm and may well help promote longevity as far as possible. I would not consider anything longer in these engines given inherent issues.

Going further, I'd prefer to run a VW502.00. And as you have found out, most are 5W40 but the certification is even more important.

There are knowledgeable technical posters on here who also believe a ACEA A3/B4 oil is also best choice to maintain cleanliness of EA888 second generation engines and that guidance has been provided from Skoda in some markets.

Personally I would prefer to run Shell helix Ultra or Mobil 3000 x 1 5W40s than Triple QX if you are sticking with ECP. Opie oils also offer a very good range of oils, good postal service and a site sponsor.

Thanks for all the advice gents. Either Shell or Quantum it is....

The Shell is good stuff (used it to begin with) but has increased in price considerably. The Quantum is seemingly what the dealer's use and it has been fine. I now use it in the VRS and my Audi A3.

I use either 502.00 or 504.00 depending on what "brand name oil" is on special at the local autoparts.  I mainly go with 5w-30 but have used 5w-40 and 0w-40.  Heck, I've even added 1L of 10w-40 semi-synth just to use up some oil that was on the shelf that Dad had bought for his mower and not used.

I used to change at 7500km intervals becaause DIY is cheap but these days at 9 years old and 185,000km and a change of vehicle somewhere on the horizon I do it at 12 month intervals which is around 10,000-12,000km for me.
