addressing battery issues

Featured Replies

Hi,

Lately my battery has been showing symptoms of getting weaker - could be just too much city driving with cold outside (2013 1.4TSI).

  1. Is it OK to charge the battery removed from the car ? (Kinda recall something against this - unfortunately I cannot charge it in place)
  2. Are there any specific procedures for re-connecting the battery ? (for the same one or in case I'd have to get a replacement)

thanks,

Tiv

I have a 2016 vrs and starting cold and the short journeys has a massive drain on the battery. Love the heated seats by the way. If I don't charge my battery every month I'm in trouble. The best thing I have bought is this https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00FC42HAA/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1510519731&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=ctek+mxs+5.0+battery+charger&dpPl=1&dpID=41PRr64gM4L&ref=plSrch

I charge through the rear cigar plug in the boot and leave it overnight with the extension  and cigar plug which you can buy separately. I also condition it in the summer as well once a month.

Yeah the cold weather is a battery killer I replaced mine last winter. And it's pricy as F! ATG for SS. Don't buy at dealers!

There is no problem charging a battery thats removed from the car as long as you use an intelligent charger which will automatically reduce the charge rate as the battery reaches capacity.  A fixed rate charger should only be used for a couple of hours or could damage the battery.

Thanks for the info. What can I expect the car to "forget" when removing the battery ? e.g. on my old car I had to "re-program" the power windows by moving them all the way up and down a couple of times (and of course the radio settings were gone).

if you have an external 12 power pack (jump starter) then you can rig this up to the fuse box and chassis whilst swapping batteries over, I did this when I had to remove my battery to fit stereo power cable for amplifier, all was well with no loss of any settings.

from reading above I could have simply connected it to 12v adapter in boot by the sounds of it?

Mark.

best not to remove the battery from the car as it will throw up loads of fault codes...

I charge mine with a ctek charger which connects to the battery...in the car (not via cig socket)......my ctek does AGM & 12v supply modes......so I can connect it & remove the battery if I need access to do work in engine bay....

also I fitted a much bigger AGM battery.
