Apparently the V40 is going to be axed and replaced with yet another bl**dy SUV.

Agree with your first comment. Stunned by your second - how long are your bl**dy legs?!

  • I do exactly the same, but it doesn't stop someone else from parking right next to me, in an otherwise empty car park

  • The OP asked the question in November 2017 so I think we're just talking amongst ourselves now!   The main difference I find from my Octavia is that the turning circle is bigger in the Super

That being the reason why I'm coming back to Skoda.

Pricing apart, Volvo have really lost their way.

In the past, I've owned Fabia VRS TDi and a MK2 Octavia VRS TDi. Both were fantastic cars.

I doubt they would agree they have lost their way, given the significant increase in sales in the last few years, but I suppose they have lost their way in terms of cars you personally want to buy.

Having said that, I think the new V60/V90 both look very smart (and the equivalent S versions, but I don't want a saloon) and if they had been out for longer I would have considered them, but they are still too new and too expensive to buy used.

If I were you, I would go with the Superb (assuming you don't have a problem with the size and can find a comfortable driving position). New iterations of any model often have issues when they first come out, like the water pump issues on the current Octavia that seem to have affected a significant number of cars for the first few years of its run; just have a look on the Octavia Mk3 section, it's a sticky thread.

Crazy talk!  They have gone from worthy but dull boxes for people with cardigans and pipes to very desirable, beautifully styled devices.  They are still supremely comfortable, and while you may struggle to fit a fridge in the boot how often to we really do that?

I think it has been an incredible, design led turnaround, thanks to superb management and deep Chinese pockets.

It's not crazy at all buddy.

FYI, I've  owned 3 MK2/3 V70s, a V40 and a V90 so I think I know what I'm talking about.

All the cars, the V90 excepted have been superb, no pun intended.

Things started to go awry when they replaced the 5 cylinder engines and went to the so called i art 4 cylinder engine range - nothing but problems and even some dealers doubt their longevity. I fully accept the reason for this as it was emissions based.

Additionally, Volvo heralded hybrid vehicles announcing both PHEV and mild hybrids, the latter at a modest increase in prices.

This hasn't happened and pricing north of £60000 is somewhat excessive for a plug in hybrid.

Yes, Volvo's are aesthetically pleasing and very comfortable to travel in.

Unfortunately that's where it stops I'm afraid.

The new V60 and V90s depreciate badly.

At the moment you can purchase brand new, pre reg Volvo V90s loaded with options for £28000.

The RRP of these cars are in the region of £45000.

This is almost certainly a knock on effect from the enhanced UK VED rates for vehicles priced at over £40000.

I wonder what the effect on future residual values will be due to this level of discounting?

As for size of vehicle's, this doesn't really come into the equation as I'm an Ex Police Class 1 Driver and Motorcyclist.

Thank you for the advice re the new Octavia, I will keep an eye on the new thread.

Mistakes

My first car was Series 2 Superb Estate (X2)

My 3rd car is my current Series 3 Estate

I learnt in an Audi A1 and went straight to the Superb Estate

The memory of being vast has gone , I really don't notice the length anymore

I had a Fabia as a loan car whislt mine was in the garage

I couldn't gauge the length in it at first (stuck too far forward in spaces) but it was okay after a few days

Basically

You get used to it pretty quickly

Visibility and all round parking sensors make it a doddle

I don't/have never had  a rear view camera so cannot comment if it's make it's easier or not but it's seems to......
