Should I replace timing chain?

Featured Replies

Wow that is an expensive job quoted!

My car had the work done in 2013 by the previous owner luckily. I am assuming it is a lifetime fix as I can't afford up to £1000 to fix it every 4 years (we only do 6k miles a year so won't hit the 140k mark)

@PhillipAshley  from all the research I did when getting this car it is a must fix if it has never been done, once the latest revision is done I am hoping you would be set permanently on the fix although the ever 4 years thing is a concern!

I don't think the 4 year / 140k miles is endorsed formally anywhere unless there is a recent VAG group release on the issue, but I doubt it as they've never really accepted the issue in the first place despite lots of pressure, news articles, magazine articles etc.  The replacement range is probably more duty cycle related than just mileage or years anyway...  Haven't heard of failures in the latest tensioner yet and it has been out since early 2012.

Hopefully they got it right with latest tensioner then.

When I had my timing chains and tensioner replaced, I took it to my reliable independent garage. I had the job done more for preventative maintenence rather than having a problem with it at the time. Cost--£600 all in. Car has done nearly 40k miles since, all working well. As for Mitchells Skoda price, OMG.

I'm looking to get this job done too and it's feasible for me to get to near Didcot. Who did it for you?
