Trackers? take them or leave them? insurance reduction??

Featured Replies

Just wondering if anyone has fitted a tracker and where youve hidden it? what brand? ebay or something expensive?

i've got a cheap Chinese one, if it works ill share the install pics. I was hoping to fit it in the sensor housing behind the rear view mirror and will investigate this unless someone has already tried.

the manual is difficult to decipher due the translated English but working my way through it bench testing it in the house with a CB transformer.

Congrats, you've just told your thief where you're hiding it :D

dont be showing too much detail on the pictures i.e. Where it is :P

Exactly! I may or may not have one and I may or may not have hidden it in the boot somewhere :mmm:

The more 'unique' your car is, the more identifiable it is from an online post by the way - just sayin'...

yeah i know but your average car thief over here cant read anyway so no issues there :D

they used to call them 'joyriders' and i've come across a few in my time and had to get out of the way fast. Now their own communities call them death drivers and this has stuck in the media as well.

reason i was asking about location (in general ofc) was the reception of the GPS and with mine being cheap and Chinese its probably not great.

Anyone who posts in a public place where they've installed a tracking device should be certified mentally insane - that defeats the whole point of having one (even if they are easily defeated by professional thieves and IMHO pointless).

As above I don't think it's worth the effort. A professional will almost certainly be able to disable it or jam the signal, and Octavias aren't particularly targeted for theft (compared to other premium offerings) so the insurance isn't expensive.

My friend has a new Focus RS and needed the tracker to get insurance, so he got one. Doesn't seem worth the effort on a VRS.

this is the main reason and yes anyone with the will will find a way to steal it etc. At least if its geo-fenced and moved there's a chance of a few mins heads up its been taken and i would be alerted.

i would save 4 times the price of the tracker on my insurance just having one installed.

Really?! Wow, must be bad where you live! :o

Arguably makes one worthwhile in that case then.

we've got the highest insurance in the UK due to the level of claims per head etc. youve just got to look as someone to give them whiplash over here.

A toe rag drug user can disable them so easily because that is their job, daily, weekly, because they have smart phones that they get out of cars and they can buy all they need to scan for trackers or blockers from Amazon or Ebay.

If you want to know about car security ask someone with all the gear and an idea, and nice cars or money, or someone elses nice car, and money for a few hours.

PS,

if your car is lifted, you can be pretty sure a 'loss adjuster' will be reading your social media posts, where you posted your security measures,

as will toe rags that read them before going and taking your vehicle away, or just parts off it, or attempting to.

That's amazing, even when I owned a car in insurance group 42 I was able to find insurers who didn't want a tracking device at a cheaper price than some insurers who wanted one - and in some cases with better cover too.
