Built in tracker?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone.

I’m close to ordering a brand new Octavia VRS. Unfortunately my last one got stolen from my drive.

As a result I have already taken measures to protect the next vehicle but the final measure is a tracker.

My brother has just picked up a Kodiaq and it has an infotainment system or something like that and smartlink. I have never had a car with this, but he says his wife can track his car through an app (clearly some trust issues there). When I asked him further about the tracking, he didn’t have a clue.

Does anyone have these systems in the car and can it live track the vehicle? Or is it a gimmick and getting tracker fitted is the best option.

Been looking at the eBay ones and they seem decent enough. I don’t want a tracker that goes through another company before the police need to be involved.

I would rather be in control of the tracking.

Is that not a function of Skoda Connect and the Columbus infotainment with onboard SIM card? A SIM card which is in the glove box and easily removed? I think you’d be better off with a dedicated tracker solution...

I guess the same function would work with a connected smart phone giving internet access to the Columbus.

But again this relies on the drivers phone being present.

A crook lock for the steering Wheel is the best deterent for a thief although obviously more inconvenient for the driver who has to remove or lock each time.

I didn’t realise there was a SIM card in the glove box. Like you say, easily removed.

Fitting an independant tracker sounds like the best option then.

I have a steering lock lock ready to go. Been reading articles about vehicle thefts and a lot of the advise these days are revert back to the old ways. Steering locks etc. Might consider fitting a kill switch or something like that.
